Chesapeake Bay Bridge – Tunnel

Shortly after we moved to the east coast I found out about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge – Tunnel. Driving across the bridge-tunnel has been on my bucket list ever since. A couple of weeks ago, we decided to take a weekend trip and drive through the Bridge – Tunnel.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel connects US 13 on Virginia’s Eastern Shore to Hampton Roads, Virginia

According to cbbt.com the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel opened on April 15, 1964, and was selected as “One of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World”.

On Virginia’s Eastern Shore, there is a Scenic Overlook with a rest area. On the Virginia Beach side of the Bridge-Tunnel, there is One Island. The Island has a restaurant – Chesapeake Grill & Virginia Originals, a Fishing Pier, and a Scenic View.

From the Eastern Shore to the Shore of Virginia Beach the Bridge-Tunnel is 17.6 miles long, it has 2 1-mile long tunnels and 4 man-made islands. You can find more great information about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge – Tunnel on this website.

While on “One Island” we watched, a ship go over one of the tunnels. It’s kind of crazy to see a huge boat go over the “road” you just drove on.

After 2 years, I finally checked driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge – Tunnel of my Bucket List. If you want more ideas check out my United States Travel Bucket List.
