During the summer it’s always fun to find new things to do to keep kids busy and parents sane.
13 Things to do in Howard County, Maryland this Summer. Here are some ideas that might be fun to add to your list of Summer Activities.

This list is just a taste of all the things available to do in Howard County. Hopefully one or two of them will be new to you!

Things to do in Howard County this Summer


 1. Go to the Farmers Market

Wednesdays Farmers Market is in Ellicott City (9421 Frederick Road Ellicott City, MD) starting May 4 through November 14th in 2016. The Market is open from 2pm – 6pm, in November the hours change to 2pm – 5pm.

Fridays Farmers market is in Columbia at Howard County General Hospital, 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia, MD. The Farmers Market is seasonal from May 6 through October 28,2016. The Market is open from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Sundays Farmers Market is in Fulton and Sundays Market is in Columbia for addresses and information about these markets to Howard County Farmers Market website.

2. Free Outdoor Movies

The Wine Bin Sponsors Free outdoor movies from Memorial Day weekend through September. The movies are played in The Wine Bin parking lot. Movies Start at 9pm. Movies include Skyfall, Pitch Perfect, Star Wars, and many more. Click here for the Full List. 

3. Walk Around Lake Elkhorn in Columbia

You can take a walk/ run around Lake Elkhorn. There is a small park on one side of the lake and a path that goes all the way around the lake, with exercise stops along the way.
*Be sure to put any bags in the trunk of your car. We had someone break into our car while parked in the parking lot at Lake Elkhorn.

4. Pick your own Fruits and Vegetables

Larriland Farms will open for the 2016 season between May 25 – May 30 and remain open through the first Sunday in November. Check the website to see exact opening day and what produce is currently available.

5. Explore Patapsco Valley State Park

Patapsco Valley State Park has 170 miles of trails with hiking, fishing, mountain biking trails and more.

6. Visit the B&O Railroad Museum

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum Ellicott City Station is open Wednesday through Sunday 11am – 4 pm. Adult admission is $8.

7. Go to a Thrift Store

My favorite thrift Stores are 2nd Ave Value Store (in Laurel and Columbia), The Salvation Army in Laurel and Laurel Thrift Store Center.

8. Play at the Park

Howard county has a lot of parks, so take your pick from this list.

9. Go Swimming

There are a lot of swimming pools scattered throughout Howard County. The Columbia Association has 23 outdoor pools and you can get a season pass to the pools. It can be expensive but depending on how much pool time you want, it’s something to consider.

10. Eat Some BBQ

Red Hot & Blue is a restaurant we discovered when we moved to the east coast (thanks to my in-laws). There are locations in Annapolis, Gaithersburg and Laurel, Maryland. There are also locations in Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia.

11. Take the Kids to Story time

Check with the library to see when they have story time. Another option is Barns and Noble. The Barns and Noble in Ellicott City has Storytime every Monday and Thursday at 11am.

12. Play at a Playground Superstore

Play N’ Learn’s Playground Superstore on Red Branch Road in Columbia has Open Play Hours Monday – Friday from 10 -6.

13. Jump Around

Head over to Sky Zone for some Jump Time. They even have designated hours for toddlers!


14. Get Ice Cream

One of our favorite places to get ice cream is TCBY. Wednesdays are Waffle Cone Wednesday and you can get a cone for .99 cents. Something to remember for hot summer days!
