Last week we spent some time learning about the Rhinoceros. My kids love animals so we decided to start learning about specific animals and then take a trip to the zoo to see some of these animals.
At first, I decided to break up the animals into groups by region so we learn about animals that live together. But then decided to focus on the animals the kids are interested in instead.
The first animal we are learning about is the Rhinoceros.
When teaching young kids about anything it’s always good to have a few different ways to teach the same lesson. Repetition is great for remembering and changing things up makes learning more fun!
Simple Lesson
Different activities you can do to teach your kids about Rhinos include watching short informational movies, reading about the Rhinoceros, doing crafts/activities, and of course going and seeing a Rhinoceros!
Video about Rhinos
To start off learning about the Rhinoceros we watched a short video put together by the San Diego Zoo about Rhinos.
This video is just over 5 minutes and packed with information about the Rhinoceros. The upbeat music and interesting way of presenting information helps to keep kids focused on the video. Even my 2-year-old enjoyed watching it.
After watching the video we talked about what we learned. I asked my kids several questions to help them remember what they watched.
Questions you could ask:
- How many different types of Rhinos are there?
- What does the word Rhinoceros mean?
- Which Rhino is the largest?
- How many horns do Rhinos have?
After discussing the video we used this fun little book I created that has simple facts and information about the Rhinoceros.
My Little Book about the Rhinoceros
This little book is cute and filled with information. It’s the perfect size for young learners and it doesn’t require staples or hole punches to put it together.
You can get your free printable Little Book at the bottom of this post to use at home or in your classroom.
Information in the Book
The Little Book about Rhinoceroses has 7 pages of content and the front cover. Many of the pictures in the book are in black and white so that kids can color them if you want.
As soon as you open the little book you will see a page filled with basic information about the Rhino including Classification, weight, diet and more.
The next page has a diagram of the Rhinoceros. When printing out your little book you can decide if you want to use the book with a blank diagram or one that is already filled in.
Additional pages talk about different Rhino facts and there is even a page to finish drawing the Rhino face.
Continue Learning After the Lesson
To continue learning about this animal after your first lesson here are a few more resources you might enjoy. You could include these in your first lesson or do another lesson learning more about the Rhinoceros.

Folding the Book
After printing out your book fold it in half like a hamburger between pages 3/4 and 7/8.
While the book is folded in half cut on the thick black line don’t cut into the line between pages 6/5 or 1/2.
Now unfold the page and fold it in half lengthwise. Unfold and pinch pages 7/8 together and 3/4 together this will pull the other pages into each other. Crease the lines between the pages and fold into a closed book.
Note: The video in this post shows how to fold the book.
