We loved learning about Christmas around the world a couple of years ago. This year I thought it would be fun to learn about Christmas in England since we didn’t get to it last time.

This year for our Christmas school we are learning about A Christmas Carol and diving into Victorian Christmases. It feels like the perfect time to also learn about Christmas in England.

Learning About Christmas in England

There are so many ways to learn about celebrating Christmas in England. You can use books, videos, crafts, recipes, and hands-on printables.

We are planning to use a mix of all of these, as well as the printable worksheet I created with some of England’s most well-known Christmas traditions.

Below are things I’m considering doing as we learn about Christmas in England. This post has very few photos since we haven’t done the unit study yet. I’ll be adding more once we’ve learned about Christmas in England.

Activities & Recipes for Christmas in England

To make your unit hands-on, you can pair the printable with crafts, books, and kid-friendly holiday foods.

Make Christmas Crackers

These are a must-have in England! Kids can decorate their own paper “crackers,” add small toys or jokes, and pull them at dinner.

Bake Mince Pies

A classic English Christmas dessert! You can make mini versions using store-bought pie crust and a jar of mincemeat or homemade filling.

Paper Crown Craft

Inside Christmas crackers, people often find paper crowns. Have kids make their own royal Christmas crowns.

Try a British Christmas Pudding (Kid-Friendly Version)

Make a simplified version by mixing crushed cookies, dried fruit, cocoa, and sweetened condensed milk, then shaping into small “puddings.”

Watch a Christmas Pantomime Clip

Pantomimes (funny holiday stage shows) are a huge part of Christmas in England. Watch a child-friendly clip or act out your own silly pantomime skit.

Kids glue on the phrase “Happy Christmas”, which is the common greeting, though they may also enjoy learning that people say “Merry Christmas” in England too!

The worksheet includes six different cut-and-paste mini-books, each sharing simple facts about English Christmas traditions.

Weather in England at Christmas

England is often cool, cloudy, and rainy in December. Snow can happen, but it’s not very common.

Father Christmas

Father Christmas is similar to Santa Claus, wearing a red coat and delivering gifts on Christmas Eve night.

Children often leave mince pies, a glass of milk … or sometimes sherry and a carrot for the reindeer.

Christmas Dinner

Traditional English Christmas foods include:
