In this post, you’ll find step by step instructions to make your own kitchen cabinet wreaths, the best size, and how to hang the mini wreaths for the holidays.
This year I decided to add some Christmas decorations to the kitchen since as a mom I feel like I sometimes spend half my life in that room.
I started out by hanging a few big paper bag snowflakes above the sink. I loved it so much that I decided to add a little more Christmas decor to the room by adding some mini wreaths on the kitchen cabinet doors.
Adding little Christmas wreaths to the kitchen cabinets is an easy way to add some Christmas magic to the kitchen without decor getting in the way or adding clutter to the countertops.

There are a lot of different mini wreath options out there and several different ways to hang the wreaths. Below I will share how I made my own wreaths and hung them on a budget.
What Size Wreath for Kitchen Cabinets
Before we get to how I made my wreaths let’s talk about size. What size wreath is best for kitchen cabinets?
It’s obvious that the wreath you have hanging on your front door is too big to hang on most kitchen cabinets (it might work on a pantry door). So what size of wreath should you get to hang on the kitchen cabinets?
To start off with let’s figure out the size of the kitchen cabinets where we will be hanging the wreath.

A standard kitchen cabinet door typically measures 28 inches high by 19 inches wide. Now obviously these measurements can be different but typically the height measurement will change but cabinets will still be 19 inches wide.
You can measure the height and width of your cabinets if you want to know their exact size. But generally speaking, we would want a wreath that is smaller than the kitchen cabinet door. So it would need to be smaller than 19 inches in most cases.
A good size wreath for kitchen cabinets would measure somewhere between 5 and 12 inches wide. You will be able o find the most options for wreaths that are between 8 and 12 inches wide. (Bigger than 12-inch wreaths would feel too big and overwhelming for most cabinets.)
A bigger wreath might be something you want to hang on a pantry door or above the stove.
Many stores sell “mini wreath” options that fit in this size range. You can find several different options on amazon or you can make your own.
My wreaths measure 5 inches wide which is smaller than most wreaths you can find. They are the perfect size for a simple understated touch of Christmas which is the look I want.

Supplies Needed for Kitchen Cabinet Wreaths

DIY Wreath for Kitchen Cabinets
There are a lot of different ways you can make a cute little wreath for your kitchen cabinets. When I decided to make wreaths to hang in the kitchen I knew they needed to be cheap (I’m only using them for Christmas time!). They also needed to be fast and easy to make (I’m a busy mom of 4).

The simple wreath I decided to make for each cabinet is made using artificial Christmas garland ties. I found them at Dollar Tree but you can also get them from amazon or at a big box/ hardware store.
Take the two garland ties and twist them together. This gives it a fuller wreath look.
To make the wreaths you need two garland ties for each wreath and that’s it.

Then take the twisted garland and form a circle. Twist the ends together to make a circle (you can hot glue it together if you want).
That’s it now you have a cheap and easy mini wreath to hang from your kitchen cabinets or anywhere else you want.

For my kitchen, I have 12 upper cabinets and I decided I wanted to hang a wreath on each door so I made 12 wreaths.
In the end, it cost me about 3 dollars to make 12 wreaths since I needed two packs of garland ties. (If you want to make smaller wreaths you can use wire cutters to make the garland ties shorter.)
After getting my wreaths made it was time to hang the little wreaths.
How to Hang Wreaths on Your Kitchen Cabinets Using Ribbon
Hanging wreaths from your kitchen cabinet is so fun for the holiday season, but it’s important to hang them the right way so you don’t damage your cabinets.
I chose to hang my wreaths using ribbon from the top of the door, I love the look of the wreath hanging from the ribbon on each of my cabinets.
Decide Where Your Wreaths Will Hang on the Cabinets
Before you do anything else it’s a good idea to decide where you want to hang your wreaths in the kitchen. This will help you to know how many wreaths you need.
I love the look of the wreaths on each of my upper cabinet doors, but that might be too much. You might prefer only doing a few cabinet doors, or maybe you want to do a section of cabinets instead of all of them. I’m sure it will look cute no matter where you decide to hang the wreaths.

Buy or Make Mini Wreaths
Now the first step to hanging the wreaths in your kitchen is getting the wreaths. I chose to make mine but there are a lot of options for a gorgeous wreath on amazon (everything from grapevine wreaths to faux pine wreaths) if you prefer to purchase them.
Decide on the Position of the Wreaths
Before you start cutting the ribbon figure out where you want the wreath positioned on your cabinet. How far down you want to wreath to hang will make a difference in how long you need to cut the length of ribbon.
Something to keep in mind when deciding on the positioning. You don’t want the wreath to get in the way so make sure to position it away from the cabinet door edges (don’t let it get smashed!) and away from handles/hardware.
Hang Command Hooks (if needed)
Depending on the weight of your wreath or if you want to leave the wreaths up all year you might want to use a command hook to hold the ribbon.
My small wreaths are really light and will only be up for the holiday season so I used tape to hang the ends of the ribbon (I’ll share more about that in a minute).
If you decide to use command hooks to hang your wreaths Place them upside down on the inside of your kitchen cabinet. Make sure that the hooks are down far enough that they won’t interfere with your cabinet door closing.

Cut Your Ribbon
I used a really narrow red ribbon to hang my wreaths but you can use any size of ribbon you want.
Personally, I wouldn’t go too crazy with the size since the wreaths are so small. I have seen some wreaths hung with huge ribbons, so it’s totally up to you and the look you like.
To give the wreaths a uniform height I cut one ribbon and used it as a template to cut the ribbon for all the cabinets that were the same size.
I first positioned the wreath where I wanted it to hang with the ribbon and then cut the ribbon once I had the right position.
You can use a measuring tape to get the same exact position if you want but I just eyeballed it and I think it ended up looking great.
In my kitchen, I have two different-sized upper cabinets. The standard height and then the ones over the microwave and fridge were shorter. So I had two different lengths of ribbon I was working with.

Hang the Wreath
The simplest way to hang the wreaths is with tape. I used regular tape to hang the wreaths in my kitchen but you could use duct tape or blue painter’s tape if you prefer.
If you use duct tape don’t leave it up for too long or it could leave a sticky residue on your cabinets.
To hang the wreath I took the piece of ribbon and wrapped it through the center around the back of the wreath. Then took both ends of the ribbon and taped them on the back of the cabinet door.
Another option would be to attach the center of the ribbon on the back of the cabinet with tape or a command hook, then tie a bow around the wreath with the ends of the ribbon. (If you decide to do this make sure to cut your ribbons long enough!)
I tried adding a red bow on my wreaths but ended up liking the simpler look without it better.

Storing the Kitchen Cabinet Wreaths for Next Year
My plan for storing the wreaths is to keep all the ribbons and greenery wreaths in a big Ziploc bag. This way it all stays together and is easy to pull out next year.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size of a wreath is best to hang from my kitchen cabinets?
The best wreath size depends on the size of your cabinets. Somewhere between 8 and 12 inches would probably be best. For my kitchen cabinets, I used wreaths that are =======.
I feel like it’s the perfect wreath size for the look I want in my kitchen this time of year.
How high should I hang the wreath on my cabinet door?
I hung my wreaths just slightly higher than the center of my cabinet door.
I think it’s a personal preference thing so be sure to try a few different heights and see where you like your beautiful wreaths hung. (Just make sure they aren’t going to get in the way of opening and using your cabinets!)

How many wreaths should I hang in my kitchen?
The number of wreaths you hang in your kitchen will depend on how big your kitchen is and how many cabinets you want to have wreaths.
For my kitchen, I hung a wreath from all of my upper cabinets so I needed 12 wreaths.
What style of wreath should I hang from my cabinets?
The sky is the limit on what style of wreath you can hang in your kitchen. It’s totally up to you what style of wreath you like and want to use.
Since I’m hanging these wreaths for Christmas I used a pine wreath. You could use any type of faux greenery wreath or even a floral wreath if you want.
Do I have to use a command hook to hang my wreath?
No – I used tape. Depending on the weight of your wreath and how long you’re going to have them hanging it might make more sense to use command strips at the top of the cabinet instead of tape.
Where else can I hang these mini wreaths?
There are so many great places you could hang these small wreaths. A couple of places I think would be fun to add the wreaths are living room built-in cabinets or a dining room hutch. I might even add them to my double door armoire in the entryway.
Final Thoughts
This was the first Christmas I have hung wreaths on my kitchen cabinets and I think it’s such a simple and beautiful decoration I can’t wait to continue hanging them each year.
