Did you ever make a paper fortune teller when you were growing up. Where I grew up we called them cootie catchers.

They are a simple paper game made by folding a square of paper into a moveable game with 8 flaps that are filled with messages, jokes or “fortunes.”

This 4th of July Joke Teller is the same shape as the fortune tellers we made growing up. Instead of predicting the future I changed it to be filled with fun kid appropriate 4th of July jokes.

How to Make a Paper Joke Teller (Cootie Catcher )

Fortune tellers are made by folding a square of paper into 8 movable flaps.

Each flap is labeled with a number and under each number is a joke (or message/ fortune). 

When you Download and print the joke teller you get folding instructions with the joke teller.

How To Make a 4th of July Joke Teller

This premade Independence Day Joke teller is easy to make (if you don’t want to print this you can make your own with a sheet of paper).

  1. Grab the free printable joke teller at the bottom of the post and save it to your computer.
  2. Print the file on regular paper (use cardstock if you want it extra sturdy).
  3. Color the joke teller (it’s in black and white so kids can personalize it).
  4. Fold and start sharing silly jokes!

How to Use a Joke Teller

To use the person holding the joke teller asks a friend to choose from each layer of the joke teller.

The choices (word/number) determine which flaps are opened and which joke is told.

The Joke Teller gives kids the choices of a the words Flag, Freedom, America and USA for the first round.

Second and third rounds kids choose a number 1,2,3 or 4. The first number selected you move the joke teller open and closing that many times.

The second number is the flap that is lifted with a joke and answer under the flap.
