One of our favorite holidays to include in early February is Groundhog Day! It’s a simple tradition that opens the door to conversations about weather, seasons, predictions, and folklore.
To go along with our Groundhog Day learning this year, I created a free printable Groundhog Day word search that works well for kindergarten through upper elementary kids.
Groundhog Day in Our Homeschool
Before jumping into the activities I have planned for Groundhog day, we usually start with a picture book read-aloud about Groundhog Day.
We often talk about questions like:
- What is Groundhog Day?
- What does it mean if the groundhog sees his shadow?
- Is this tradition based on science or folklore?
For younger kids, we keep it simple and focus on winter vs. spring and shadows.

For older kids, we dig a little deeper into weather predictions, traditions, and cause and effect. It’s always fun to hear what the kids think will happen before February 2nd arrives!
Groundhog Day Word Search Printable
After our discussion, I like to include an easy, independent activity and this Groundhog Day word search is perfect for that. It works great as:
- A morning work activity
- A homeschool language arts extension
- A quiet activity while you prep lunch
- A fun Groundhog Day center or station
I created two different Groundhog Day wordsearch pages. One is simple with larger letters only 9 words to find. The second page incudes 15 Groundhog Day–themed words that review key ideas related to the holiday, including:
- Groundhog
- Shadow
- Winter
- Spring
- Burrow
- Prediction
- Weather
- February
- Sun
- Cloud
- Tradition
- Cold
- Warm
- Phil
The mix of simple and slightly more challenging words makes it a great fit for multiple age levels, especially if you’re teaching more than one child.
