Moving Checklist – Things to Do When You Move!

Moving is often exciting and stressful at the same time. There are so many things to remember when moving I created a moving checklist to help you keep track of everything.

In the past 7 years, we have moved 10 different times so we have a little experience with everything moving related. A few of our moves have been big moves (across the country) and several have been smaller ones (within an hour of each other).

When you’re moving there are so many things you need to remember so you don’t forget to do something important.

It can quickly become overwhelming trying to remember everything so I made a Moving Checklist printable to help you track what you still need to get done.

This moving checklist includes common things that need to be done when you’re moving as well as space for you to add anything else you need to get done. You can get your printable checklist at the bottom of the post.

Things You Need to Do When Moving

When you are moving to a new place across town or across the country there are several things you need to do and many you don’t want to forget! Here are several of those things you don’t want to forget to do!

Forward the Mail

Forwarding your mail is easy but important you don’t want your mail to end up sitting in a mailbox across the country from where you live!

You can schedule your mail ahead of time so be sure to do this a week or two before you actually move.

To change your mailing address online go to usps.com and set up your mail to be regularly forwarded.

This will forward your mail and packages to a new address for 6 months, after which you can renew it for another 6 months if you need to. To set up mail forwarding online it costs $1.05 so that USPS can verify your identity.

During the 6 months of mail forwarding, be sure to get the next item on your list done.

Change of Address

Change Addresses

Shortly after moving to a new address be sure to change all of your addresses with any banks, credit card companies, your insurance, subscriptions, etc.

Update Drivers License and Registration

If your moving in the same state you typically only have to update your address with the States Department of Motor Vehicles.

If you have moved to a new state get ready for more paperwork as you register your vehicles in the new state and get new drivers licenses.

Cancel Utilities at Previous Address

Turn of all of the utilities at your previous address. Often these can be scheduled ahead of time.

Don’t forget to cancel all of the utilities it wouldn’t be fun to forget one and get that unexpected bill.

Turn on Utilities at New Address

Schedule ahead of time to have your utilities turned on when you arrive at your new home.

It’s always nice to have power and water when you’re trying to move into a new place.

Set up and Install Internet

Internet Install

Schedule a time for your internet to be installed. Depending on the company the install requires different things. If you are renting this might not be needed.
