Groundhogs day is one of those little holidays throughout the year that are kind of random.
What is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog is a tradition in the United States and Canada each year on February 2. The tradition was brought to the United States by German immigrants that settled in Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The legend goes that if the groundhog sees his shadow (it’s a sunny day) there will be six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog doesn’t see it’s shadow spring will arrive early.
Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog at the Groundhog Day ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is correct in predicting an early spring or long winter roughly 50% of the time.
Each year it’s fun to celebrate groundhog day and do some fun groundhog day activities.
Printable Groundhog Day Craft for Kids
To keep things simple this printable groundhog day craft for kids is perfect for in the classroom or at home.
Groundhog Day Craft Supplies
- free printable (pdf at bottom of the post)
- something to color with
- scissors
- tape
- popsicle stick
- plastic cup (optional)
Groundhog Popsicle Stick Puppet
The groundhog popsicle stick puppet is a simple and easy craft to make with kids for groundhog day.
Simply print out the printable (there are 4 puppets per page) and cut the four groundhog puppets apart before giving each child a puppet.
Have the kids color the groundhog and sign. We also added googly eyes to our groundhogs, because who doesn’t love googly eyes.
Cut out the groundhog holding the happy groundhog day sign and tape it to a popsicle/ craft stick.
You can leave the craft as a simple popsicle puppet or you can add it to a cup to make it a popup puppet.
To put the puppet in a cup, an adult can cut a slit in the bottom of a plastic cup and put the popsicle stick through it.
My kids loved playing with their cute groundhog puppets.
