Easy Ways to Save Money on Maternity Clothes

I just passed the halfway point of this pregnancy with baby 3 and it’s time to start breaking out the maternity clothes.

My first two kids were born in the winter or early spring so most of the maternity clothes I already have are for cooler temps. I also started this pregnancy weighing about 30 pounds more than my previous pregnancies so I have been shopping for a few maternity clothes the past couple weeks.

While there are tons of fun places to purchase maternity clothes I like to try to keep the cost of maternity clothes as low as I can.

By using simple hacks to save money on maternity clothes I can enjoy a variety of clothes with out a huge expense and if I decide to buy one or two things that are more expensive it’s okay because the other things were cheap.

Easy Ways to Save Money on Maternity Clothes

These are simple ways I have saved money on maternity clothes during my three pregnancies. Most of the time I don’t start wearing maternity clothes until I’m about 20 weeks and then I try to keep my maternity wardrobe minimalist since I don’t wear the clothes for that long.

Shop Discount Stores

Ross and TJ Max can be an awesome place to find deals on clothes. For this third pregnancy, I have found some awesome deals on maternity clothes at Ross.

I found 3 tops that I love for $5 or less. I have been hitting all the Ross stores I can to see if they have different tops. So far I have had one amazing store and a couple of stores that weren’t so great.

Thrift Stores and Consignment Stores

Thrift stores and consignment stores are a great place to find deals. I have found several brand new maternity items with the tags still on at thrift stores. Other items I have found have been lightly used and in great condition at a great price.

Some of my favorite Thrift/ Consignment stores are:

• Kid to Kid (They have maternity things!)
• Small local Thrift Stores
• Savers

Use the Hair Tie Trick

When your jeans still fit except for the button using a simple hair tie trick to do up your pants is a great way to save money and wear clothes you already have.

This trick is really simple. Just wrap a hair tie around the button of your jeans, pull the tie through the button hole and then hook it back on your button.

You can also purchase a belly band to wear with your jeans and convert them into maternity pants for at least a little longer.

Take advantages of Hand-me-downs

I have learned that hand-me-downs are not only a great way to save money on baby and kids clothes but also on maternity clothes. If you have friends or family that are getting rid of maternity clothes and are close to your size give the hand-me-downs a try.

I have also heard of mom friends doing maternity cloth swaps. So when your pregnant you can barrow maternity clothes from friends and then pass them back. This works best when you and your friends/ family aren’t expecting at the same time!

Get Clothes that are Nursing Friendly

When purchasing maternity clothes consider getting items that are nursing friendly. By getting clothes you can use longer than just a couple months during pregnancy you are able to save money by getting more use out of the items.

Using maternity clothes after birth is also a great way to save money as you transition from pregnancy weight back to your post pregnancy size.

Use Rakuten for Shopping Online

Watch for Sales

When your shopping for clothes be sure to watch for sales. Most stores even thrift stores will have discount days or sales on different items. Also don’t forget to check for coupons.

Shop Amazon

Amazon is continually adding more and more clothing options. There are a lot of great maternity cloth options you can get on Amazon at great prices. One of my favorite dresses is a short sleeve maxi dress I got on Amazon and while it’s not specifically a maternity dress, the style works great for while I’m expecting.

Checkout Target

I recently got a maternity dress at Target and I’m loving it. Target frequently has cartwheel offers that help you save even more when shopping in the store.

While target doesn’t have a ton of maternity clothes options, the items they do have are at affordable prices. Yes the clothing items you find at other places on this list are probably cheaper but if you’re looking for a specific item you might have more luck at target than some of the other stores.

Shop Your Closet

Shopping your closet might seem like a strange idea when your pregnant but just take a minute and see if you have any items that will work during your pregnancy. Do you have some loose t-shirts or sweaters you can wear with your growing belly? How about a pair of jeans that are loser than the others?

While shopping your closet might not work for your whole pregnancy you might be able to put of purchasing new maternity clothes for a few weeks using some items in your closet.

Don’t forget you might be able to steal a t-shirt or two from your husband’s side of the closet too!
