Fabulous 5 – A Simple Morning Routine for Kids

Those of you that know me personally, know that I don’t love schedules. I don’t like being restricted by a schedule, but I have discovered I do like the freedom of a morning routine.

Ok so first of let me tell you how I view a schedule and a routine.

What is a Schedule?

A schedule for me is something that has a set time for each task. The dictionary definition of a schedule is a plan for carrying out a process or procedure, giving lists of intended events and times.

I think the reason I don’t feel like schedules work for me is because, every day at our house looks a little different and when I have tried to do a schedule, I end up feeling frustrated and confined.

The frustration comes from living life with kids, life with to kids doesn’t always happen “like the schedule says”. I feel confined because I create this schedule and try to follow it but if I decide to go to an event or something the whole schedule goes out the window.

A schedule is something I feel like you have to be consistent for it to work and I’m just not good at keeping my life moving like clockwork.

What is a Routine?

The dictionary defines routine as a sequence of actions regularly followed. So, it pretty much means doing specific tasks regularly.

A routine is also something that works best when done consistently, but it doesn’t necessarily have any time constraints.

Why I love Routines

I personally love routines because (1) a routine can easily become a habit and (2) there are no set times!

Things at our house don’t follow a set schedule we do follow routines each day. We have a routine for when the kids wake up, for quiet time and for bedtime.

For example, a routine I have followed for years without much thought is taking out my contacts and brushing my teeth each night. The time I do these tasks changes each day, but I always do those two simple tasks in that order before I go to bed.

Each of or daily routines follow a pattern but doesn’t happen at a set time. If you have struggled with finding a schedule that works for your family, try creating routines for your day and see if that helps.

Morning Routine

Fabulous 5

Ok I know your probably wondering what the heck is fabulous 5. It’s the fun name I came up with for the 5 tasks I want my kids to do each morning.

5 Simple Morning Tasks

These tasks are simple and only take a few minutes each. Get the Fabulous 5 printable at the bottom of this post.

Make Bed

Making their bed is something even young kids can do. They might need help the first few times but with practice, they will get the hang of it.

Get Dressed

After making their bed the kids get dressed and put their pajamas away.

This is my kid’s favorite step to skip. They would live in their pajamas if I let them and when we don’t have to go anywhere you will often find all of us in our pajamas.

The days we have somewhere to be having the kids get dressed first thing in the morning makes it so much easier when it’s time to leave the house.

Eat Breakfast

After the kids are dressed for the day they head to the kitchen for a quick breakfast.

Fresh fruit, frozen waffles, and cereal are some of our family’s favorite breakfast foods.

Note: Lately the kids have wanted to eat before doing anything else so we have started doing breakfast as the first step in our Fabulous 5 routine.

Brushing teeth one step in our simple morning routine.

Brush Teeth

Once the kids are done eating, we head to the bathroom for them to brush their teeth.

Because of their ages, I still help with getting their toothbrushes ready and checking their teeth.

The kids have electric toothbrushes that they love using.

If your kids hate brushing your teeth Disney electric toothbrushes made a huge difference in our house.

Do Hair

While the kids are brushing their teeth and making silly faces in the bathroom mirror, I get their hair done. We usually keep hairstyles simple, so it only takes a couple of minutes and the kids are ready to go.

That’s it after doing those 5 simple things each morning the kids are ready for school, a field trip or any other activity we might have for the day.

The great thing with this morning routine is that it works for kids of all ages and as the kids get older you are less involved in making the routine happen.

This routine works for kids that go to school and those that don’t. It can be done on a schedule with a set time or as a routine that happens whenever the kids get up.

I would love to hear how this fabulous 5 morning routine helps your family.
