Writing a letter to Santa Claus is a fun Christmas tradition to start with when your kids are young. To make this tradition easier I made a free printable letter to Santa template you can use.
These letters to Santa are fun keepsakes to add to your kid’s scrapbooks or journals. It’s always fun to look back on previous years’ Christmas list.
Over the years of Christmas letters, you can see how interests have changed and how handwriting has improved.
Reasons to Write a Letter to Santa
There are multiple reasons to write Santa a letter each Christmas. The free printable Santa letter template makes writing their own letter easy for kids as a class activity or a family activity.
It’s A Fun Christmas Tradition
One of the reasons to write a letter to Santa Clause is because it’s a fun (and inexpensive holiday activity). All you need to write a letter to Santa is some paper (or a fun template), an envelope, and a stamp.
It’s an Educational Christmas Activity
Not only is writing a letter to Santa Clause a fun Christmas activity it’s also a great way to make writing fun for the holidays.
How is writing a letter to Santa educational? There are several things kids can learn and practice by writing a letter to Santa including:
- letter writing process
- Handwriting
- Spelling
- How to write their name
- Coloring in the lines
- How to address an envelope (address and return address)
It Can Help Parents with Gift Ideas
Another great reason to have kids write a letter to Santa is to give parents an idea of what their kids are wanting for Christmas.
Plus, once the letter is sent the kids can’t keep changing their mind every two seconds (or not).

Letter To Santa Template
The letter to Santa templates I created is a fill in the blank style making it easier for kids to fill out on their own.
Toddlers and preschoolers will even be able to use this letter with a little help. (a blank letter can be harder for young kids).
I also added some fun elements for the kids to color and make the letter their own before sending it to Santa.
I specifically designed the printable letter to Santa template in black and white so it didn’t use as much ink to print and so the kids could make a personalized letter.
Writing a Letter to Santa
Before starting to write your letter to Santa get some yummy treats, turn on the Christmas music and find a cozy spot (near the Christmas tree is my favorite).
When starting your simple letter there is a space for kids to write the date at the top of the page then the Dear Santa letters start.
Below the greeting area, there are areas for the kids to fill out. The first spaces are a space for them to write their name and age.
Below that is a section that says “this year I” kids can put anything they want in this section. You can direct your kid to write something specific in this section if you want or it can be up to the kids. A few possible things they can share in this section include:
- Something they learned
- A place they visited
- If they were good or bad
- An event
- Something they loved
One of my kids shared what she learned about while the other shared a place he visited this last year.
The next and possibly most important section of the letter to Santa is a space for kids to write their Christmas wish list (list of gifts they want).
The wording at the start of this section is intentional. Instead of saying I want___ I worded this section “A few things I think it would be really fun to get___.
Something we really focus on with our kids is that they can write whatever they would like on their list to Santa, but that doesn’t mean they will get it all.
Their letter is a list of fun ideas and Christmas wishes for Santa (not demands), and he gets to pick what he gives to each child. (Just like they pick the gifts to give others.)
The bottom of the letter has space for your child’s name and a fun Santa image for the kids to color.
Mailing Your Letter to Santa
Once you have the printable letter to Santa all field out it’s time to send the letter to Santa.
Depending on your kid’s ages this is a great opportunity for them to learn about addressing an envelope. For younger kids, I address the envelope and let them seal it and add the stamp. Older kids can address the envelops on their own.
In the past, our kids would write their letters, put them in the envelope and give it to dad to mail. That was it and we could easily just keep the letters.
But this year they really wanted to mail their letters. Luckily there are some places you can mail your kids letters to Santa and possibly even get a letter back from him (if you mail it in time).
Mailing a letter to Santa is definitely part of the magic of Christmas at our house.
