Inside: Free printable Letter B for Butterfly Craft. This fun alphabet activity is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.
This year, I have both a toddler and a preschooler who are learning the alphabet. To make it more fun I wanted to include hands-on activities.
So we’re doing ABC crafts! One for each letter of the alphabet. This week we are doing a craft for the letter B.
Last week the kids loved making their Letter A crafts.
Alphabet Crafts For Toddlers and Preschoolers
These crafts are a fun way to introduce capital letters, and letter sounds through hands-on activities. (We will eventually get to lowercase letter crafts.)
This week we focused on the uppercase letter B. We read some fun Letter B picture books, practiced the sound the letter “B” makes, and made this B is for Butterfly craft.

It’s perfect for at-home preschool, pre-k students, kindergarten children, or even first grade learners. (Being totally honest my daughter in third grade also thinks they are fun to make.)
Letter B Craft
There are so many words that start with the letter B (butterfly, bug, bunny to name just a few). But making a butterfly craft was a fun way to connect the letter B with the letter’s shape and sound.
The capital letter B makes the body of the butterfly with a wing out the back and eyes the kids can add to make a unique butterfly they get to design.
Kids color the uppercase letter B, then glue on the wing and eyes. You can even add pom poms, glitter, construction paper or any other craft supplies you want.
This printable craft doesn’t just look cute it builds fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and letter recognition.
It’s also a fun craft that doubles as an educational activity for young children even toddlers can have fun with it. (My three year old loved it!)
I made one of the butterflies along with my kids. I used a ruler to make different sections on my butterfly wings and then colored them. It turned out really cute. If you’re doing this craft with older kids that’s a fun way to do it.
My 3- and 4-year-olds had a lot of fun just coloring their butterflies and they are really cute.
Keep in mind when you see the perfectly put together cute alphabet crafts (or any craft) for preschool and toddlers…they probably weren’t made by toddlers or preschoolers.
I personally feel like it’s really important to let kids use there imagination and create instead of “getting it right” all the time. They are still experiencing hands-on fun as they practice letter recognition and fine motor skills.
So don’t stress if the butterfly ends up rainbow-colored. It’s still a perfect addition to your alphabet activities and will make a colorful alphabet wall.
Yes, you could sit next to them and make sure they only color the letter B perfectly and they glue everything in the right spot. But that makes it a whole lot less fun for all of us.
How We Made Our Letter B for Butterfly Craft
Instead of cutting out everything first I let the kids color the shapes with crayons, colored pencils and markers. They also loved adding some stickers to their butterflies.
While they colored I read some letter B books and then I joined them coloring. It was really fun and I love how our letter B craft turned out.
After the kids finished coloring I cut everything out for them and then they glued it all together.
After the kids were done with their butterfly “B” we put them on the wall (in a classroom you could do a bulletin board display).
I’m so excited to see what the whole alphabet will look like when we are done.
