Inside: Free printable Letter A for Alligator Craft. This fun alphabet activity is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.
This year, I have both a toddler and a preschooler who are learning the alphabet. To make it more fun I wanted to include hands-on activities.
So we’re doing ABC crafts! One for each letter of the alphabet.

These crafts are a fun way to introduce capital letters, and letter sounds through hands-on activities. (We will eventually get to lowercase letter crafts.)
For our first week, we focused on the uppercase letter A. We read some fun Letter A picture books, practiced the sound of “A,” and made this A is for Alligator craft (a fun alphabet craft that turned out to be a huge hit with my kids!)

It’s perfect for at-home preschool, pre-k students, kindergarten children, or even first grade learners. (Being totally honest my daughter in third grade also thinks they are fun to make.)
Letter A Craft
There are so many words that start with the letter A (apple, astronaut, acorn, ant to name a few). But making an alligator craft was a fun way to connect with the letter’s shape and sound.
The head of the alligator is shaped like a capital letter A (with a bumpy side).
Kids color the uppercase letter, then glue on teeth and eyes. You can even add pom poms, pieces of green construction paper, or card stock for extra fun.

This printable craft doesn’t just look cute it builds fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and letter recognition.
It’s also a fun craft that doubles as an educational activity for young children even toddlers can have fun with it.
I made one of the Alligators along with my kids and it turned out how I envisioned…the kids alligators did not. But they are really cute and they had so much fun making them.
So keep in mind when you see the perfectly put together cute alphabet crafts (or any craft) for preschool and toddlers…they probably weren’t made by toddlers or preschoolers.

I personally feel like it’s really important to let kids use there imagination and create instead of “getting it right” all the time. They are still experiencing hands-on fun as they practice letter recognition and fine motor skills.
So don’t stress if the alligator ends up rainbow-colored. It’s still a perfect addition to your alphabet activities and will make a colorful alphabet wall.
Yes, you could sit next to them and make sure they only color the letter A green and they glue everything in the right spot. But that makes it a whole lot less fun for all of us.

How We Made Our Letter A for Alligator Craft
Before we started I did cut out the free templates ahead of time for the kids.
At table they had the cut out pieces of their alligator, crayons and glue.
While they colored I read some letter A books and then I joined them coloring. It was really fun and I love how our letter A craft turned out.
(You could also let the kids paint the A instead of coloring if you want or give them extra materials to decorate with.)

After the kids were done with their alligators we put them on the wall (in a classroom you could do a bulletin board display).
I’m so excited to see what the whole alphabet will look like when we are done.
