I Have A Dream Craft for Kids (+Free Printable)

Inside: Free Printable “I Have A Dream” craft for kids.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day, the third Monday in January, with this ‘I Have a Dream’ mobile craft and writing activity.

As we have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. I thought it would be fun to make a simple craft and have the kids write their own dreams.

I love the format of this craft because for kids that don’t love writing they only have to write a little bit. Plus they get to cut, use tape and color.

I Have a Dream Craft

I saw a few crafts similar to this one I created on pinterest but they were all clouds… I wanted the shapes to be different so I created my own.

You can get the free printable ‘I have a dream’ craft pdf file at the bottom of this post.

This craft is a great activity for elementary school students. Older kids can do the craft on their own and write more detailed answers. Preschoolers and Kindergarten students can do this activity with some help.

The ‘I Have A Dream’ Printable

The printable ‘I have a dream’ page has four different shapes:

  • A large cloud shape that says “I Have a Dream…”
  • A heart that says “I Dream for Myself”
  • A house that says “I Dream for My Community”
  • A world that says ” I Dream for the World”

The cloud is the top of the mobile with the heart, house and world hanging below it. I had the thought to have the kids write answers on the heart, house and world and not on the cloud shape.

Making the Craft

This craft is really simple and their isn’t a wrong way to do it. You can cut it out then color and write the answer or color, write the answer and then cut it out.

My kids cut out each of the shapes and then they wrote the answer and colored it.

Depending on what the kids use to color the shapes you might want to use a black marker to write their answers so you can easily see them. We wrote our answers with a black pen and it is kind of hard to see what they wrote on each shape.

Putting Together The ‘I Have A Dream’ Mobile Craft

Now that everything is cut out, colored and answered it’s time to put the mobile craft together.

I gave the kids twine and tape and let them decide how long they wanted the heart, world and house to hang down from the cloud.

They also looped twine at the top to hang the mobile.
