10 Easy Ways to Save Money

Do Grocery Pick Up Instead of Going Shopping

You might be wondering how grocery pick up is going to save you money, but just hear me out.

Grocery pickup has quickly become one of my favorite ways to save money. Using grocery pickup, I’m able to see the exact total of my order before I place it. I avoid impulse buys which saves me money and helps me eat healthier.

There are a lot of grocery stores offering pick up right now so check your local favorites and see which ones are offering grocery pick up.

Shop What’s on Sale

Purchasing groceries that are on sale each week is a great way to get the most for your money. While we have a few staple food items, like bananas, that we buy each week we also try to shop what’s on sale.

Getting fruits and veggies in season can save you a lot of money and help you enjoy the best produce. At our house we love it when it’s summer and so many of our favorite fruits and veggies are on sale and taste the best.

Get Cashback on Grocery Receipts

While couponing can be overwhelming you can easily use a grocery rebate app or two to get cashback on your grocery purchases.

You can now even get cashback on your Walmart grocery pick up orders using Ibotta. Join Ibotta and link your Walmart account to start getting cashback on your next order pick up. Use code dbcvtol when you register for an Ibotta account.

Change the Thermostat

Ok I know that this one is simple, and you have probably heard this tip before, but it really does make a difference. Changing your thermostat just a couple of degrees can make a difference in your electric bill.

I’ll be the first to admit we like to keep our house cool in the summer, especially at night. So I try to use fans to keep the cool air moving and change the temperature up a few degrees during the day and when we aren’t home.

Since we like to keep the house cooler, during the winter we don’t have as much of a problem lowering costs. If for some reason we have a cooler day and I want the house warmer we usually use that day to do baking instead of turning up the heat. Then we get to warm the house and enjoy some yummy homemade treats.

Limit Subscriptions and Memberships

While it might seem that canceling all of your subscriptions might save you the most money, it might actually end up costing you more.

A couple of years ago we decided not to renew our Costco membership to try to save some money. It took us two months to realize we were spending more money and getting things we didn’t like as much because we didn’t have our membership. Needless to say we have a Costco membership.

While that’s just one example of a membership that actually saves my family money. There are tons of memberships and subscriptions out there and lets be honest many of them aren’t necessary.

So, when deciding what subscriptions and memberships are worth keeping. Think about what the subscription offers, if you can get that same service/product somewhere else cheaper and how you can maximize that subscription/membership.

For our family, we have a few different subscriptions and memberships, but we feel like they all add value to our family or help us save money. The subscriptions and memberships we have change and what we have right now will be different than what we have a year from now and that’s ok. Just make sure the subscriptions you have you actually use and are worth the money they cost each month/year.

Eat at Home

I’ll be the first to admit that there are days I don’t want to cook and we got out to eat but…eating at home does save us a ton of money.

Making your meals from scratch and eating at home can really help cut back on monthly spending. Something to be careful of is thinking that premade meals eaten at home will save you money.

If instead of eating out you’re buying premade and packaged meals you’re probably not saving much money. Making your own food is the best way to save money and eat healthier (BONUS!)

Use a Free Budgeting Tool

One of the biggest changes we made to help us save money was starting a budget. It’s really hard to save money when you have no idea where your money is going. So a budget is a must if you’re getting serious about saving money.

Our favorite way to budget is using the EveryDollar app. It’s free and you can access it from multiple devices, making it easy to keep the budget up to date.

Find Free and Cheap Activities to Enjoy

While trying to save money and pay off debt is a great goal, sometimes it can be hard to stick to for long. There is always something fun it seems like you’re missing out on which can make you want to quit living frugally.

We have found that budgeting a fun activity every couple of months has helped us stay focused on saving. We also love finding free and cheap things to do in our local area. We have found many awesome parks and hiking trails because of wanting to get out without spending any money.

Cut Your Hair at Home

Cutting your hair at home might sound extreme and maybe it is for some, but at least cutting the kids hair at home can save you a lot of money.

Jared is gotten a lot of practice and does a great job cutting his and our little boy’s hair at home. Since the boy’s hair grows so fast, cutting their hair at home saves us money almost every month. While there is the initial expense of getting some hair cutting supplies you will quickly get your money’s worth. We have had our hair clippers for 7 years and they are still going strong.
