I have come to realize saving money is a skill that comes easier for some people than others. Luckily like any skill, we can all learn to save money even if it doesn’t come naturally for us.

There are numerous things you can make at home to save money like the obvious coffee/drinks and meals.
While making your meals and drinks at home can save you a ton of money each year those are pretty obvious so I wanted to share a few less obvious items you can make at home to save money.
10 Things to Make to Save Money
Making things at home can save you a lot of money in the long run. Even if it only saves you a little bit of money each time you make something, the more you make the item the more money you save.
1. Seasoning Mixes
Seasoning mixes are easy to mix at home and typically less expensive because you get so much more when you mix it yourself. Plus you also know exactly what is in your mixes and don’t have any fillers.
Here are a few common seasoning mixes you can easily make at home:
2. Cards
Handmade cards are my favorite to receive and send to others. Plus they are so inexpensive to make. You can keep your cards simple or get fancy whatever works for you. If you have kids get them involved in the card creation process.

These questionnaires make the perfect card for parent’s. Click the link below to get the free printable questionnaire to fill out with your kids.
3. Decorations
Just because you’re trying to save money doesn’t mean you can’t have decorations for your home or for different holidays. Instead of buying decor consider making it, you could even do a Dollar Store DIY project for different decor items.
Some of our favorite decorations to make are garlands for different seasons and holidays.
4. Baked Goods
Cookies, bread, tortillas and muffins are just a few of the baked goods you can make at home to save money. I remember growing up my mom made 6 loves of bread each week and she said that because she bought her baking supplies in bulk each loaf of bread cost her pennies.

So if you go through a lot of bread at your house consider making your own to help cut back your grocery budget. Plus there is nothing better than the smell of bread baking and enjoying that first warm slice of homemade bread.
5. Bath Bombs and Bath Salts
Bath Bombs have become a big thing over the past several years, and while it can be fun to splurge and buy one every once in a while the cost can really add up.
Luckily you can make your own bath bombs and bath salts for a fraction of the cost of purchasing them from the store.
6. Mixes
Brownie mix, pancake mix and other baking mixes can make baking at home quick and easy. Luckily you can make your own mixes at home. Make a big batch of dry pancake mix that will last you a month for a lot less than a box of pancake mix will cost you.
Here are some Dry Mix recipes you might want to try making:
7. Air Freshener
All it takes is a quick search on Pinterest to find tons of recipes for DIY Air Freshener scents. I personally love using essential oils to make room sprays.
A glass spray bottle filled with water and a couple drops of oil works perfect. Just make sure to shake it up before using it each time.

8. Play Doh
Play doh is one of my kids favorite activities and while it’s not very expensive to buy it’s so cheap to make and you get so much more that we almost always make our own. Plus when we make our own we get to make a variety of colors.
9. Salad Dressing
It still surprises me how cheap it is to make my own salad dressings. Vinaigrette dressings are probably the cheapest to make, but even making your own ranch dressing can be less expensive than purchasing it at the store, depending on the brand you purchase.
10. Gifts
There are so many great DIY gift options out there, just take a minute to search Pinterest and you will be overwhelmed with ideas. While making your own gifts can sometimes save you money, DIY gifts are also unique and usually one of a kind.

In this post I shared some fun DIY gifts for Valentine’s Day that would also work for several other occasions. This DIY Personalized Guess Who Game also makes a fun gift.
