5 East Coast Road Trip Destinations with something for Everyone #eastcoast #travel #roadtrip

Summer is road trip season. Whether you’re traveling by motorcycle, car or RV, nothing matches the freedom and romance of a sunny open road. While there’s something to be said for aimless wandering, that kind of travel isn’t for everyone. Road-tripping to a destination, on the other hand, makes for a well-rounded summer adventure.

Fortunately, the east coast is overflowing with fun, educational and entertaining vacation destinations for travelers of any age. But this year, instead of visiting a theme park or big-city tourist trap, why not hit the road to somewhere different?

With that in mind, here are a few ideas for road-trip destinations you may have overlooked.

Maryland’s Historic National Road

Perfect for: travelers who enjoy a leisurely pace with frequent stops along the way.

Fans of American History will love a trip along the Historic National Road, which was the first improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Constructed between 1811 and 1837, The National Road started in Cumberland, Maryland and continued east for 620 miles to Vandalia, Illinois. During its time, The National Road served as the main thoroughfare for settlers heading west.

Today, US 40, Alt US 40, and parts of Maryland Route 144 track portions of the original road from Baltimore, across the northern part of Maryland, and up to the Pennsylvania border. Travelers following the original route will pass dozens of museums, state parks, artisanal villages and other points of historical interest. In addition, lucky road trippers will also see many of the road’s original architectural features like the Casselman River Bridge and the last remaining National Road toll gate house in Maryland.

Charleston, South Carolina

Perfect for: travelers who prefer their dining, culture, and history all in one place.

If you’re in the mood for a little southern charm, point your RV east and head for Charleston, South Carolina. Sitting on the Atlantic Coast, halfway between Savannah, Georgia and Myrtle Beach, Charleston has been lauded for its hospitality by many of the country’s top travel magazines, and was even named the No. 1 Travel Destination in the US by Condé Nast Traveler. And it’s no wonder why.

The city is famed for its history. Visitors can tour fantastically preserved colonial-era mansions, plantations, and Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Charleston also boasts a number of fine bars and restaurants that your favorite foodie will just love to explore. Visitors also shouldn’t miss the Charleston City Market, which for more than 200 years has served as the cultural heart of the city. Top it all off with plenty of artistic and cultural attractions, and a visit to Charleston should be on any summer traveler’s bucket list.

Cape Cod National Seashore

Perfect for: active families who love the beach and the outdoors.

Outdoor lovers would do well to visit the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts. The area was first designated a national park by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and features forty miles of pristine sandy beaches, marshes, and ponds. The park is also home to Marconi Station — the site of the first two-way transatlantic radio transmission.

Biking is a favorite activity of many seashore visitors. The site includes three bike paths running throughout the park, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts also maintains a 26-mile bike path between the towns of Denis and Wellfleet. In addition to beach fun and biking, a visit to Cape Cod also comes with all the charm of a New England coastal village, including lighthouses, beach art, and other tourist attractions.

The Newport Mansions of Rhode Island

Perfect for: fans of Downton Abbey and lovers of historical art, architecture, and design.

During the Gilded Age, many of the country’s wealthiest families fled the city heat and spent their summers on the coast in Newport County, Rhode Island. Of course, the Vanderbilts, Schermerhorns, and Berwinds couldn’t vacation in any old home. So they set about to build some of the largest, most extravagant mansions in the country.

Today, many of these homes are owned and managed by The Preservation Society of Newport County which preserves these great houses — known collectively as The Newport Mansions. Visitors can tour homes like The Breakers, Rosecliff, and Kingscote to get a taste of what life was life for this country’s first batch of aristocrats.

Miami to Key West, Florida

Perfect for: sun worshipers and convertible owners.

The route from Miami to Key West, Florida is one of the most remarkable trips in the country. Follow US Route 1 — also known as the Overseas Highway —  out of Miami and through the Florida Keys for 113 sun-drenched miles. Along the way, you’ll cross The Seven Mile Bridge, at one time one of the longest bridges in existence, connecting Knight’s Key with Little Duck Key.

Once in Key West, you can visit the Southernmost Point in the Continental United States, go snorkeling or scuba diving in the area’s stunning blue waters or get literary at The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Then, when the sun goes down, you can enjoy the tropical nightlife in one of the city’s many bars and restaurants.
