As I have been thinking about the back to school season I thought it would be fun to create a couple of educational quote printables. The first one I’m excited to share is about teaching our kids how to think.
Right now there are a lot of parents wondering what they should do this fall for school.
School districts are making hard decisions about how to best have classes and parents are considering all their options. Should they consider homeschooling, send their kids to school or look into distance learning.
While there are a lot of different education options it can be overwhelming deciding what is right for your kids. No matter what you choose someone will disagree with your choice and that’s a good thing.
How you decide is best to educate your kids is not going to be the right choice for everyone and what I decide isn’t going to be the best choice for everyone. That’s why it’s such a great thing that we have options.
We can choose the best way to educate our kids by how they learn and our personal situations. Even people that choose to do the same type of education, like homeschool, will do it differently.
As I have been thinking about everything going on right now there are a couple of educational quotes that really stood out as important to me.
Educational Quote Coloring Page
The first quote I turned into a coloring page is “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”
This is something that has really stood out as important for me to teach my kids and to remember myself.
It’s good to question things, that’s how we think things through and decide what we believe.
When anyone tries to tell us what to think we should start questioning, it’s really important to be able to think and find answers for yourself.
Growing up my Dad was really good at playing the opposite side in a discussion. No matter what the topic was he would often ask questions as if he was coming from the opposing side of the argument.
His favorite was to ask “why?” over and over. Then he would often say he agreed with what we said, he just wanted us to know why we thought that way.
It was so frustrating as a teen, but now as an adult, I really appreciate that he helped me think through. It helped me figure out what I believed about things, instead of him telling me what I should think.
As we start the new school year this fall I really want to focus on helping my kids, even though they are young, ask the questions and find the answers.
I want them to know what they think about something not what mom or dad thinks about it.
I think teaching our kids how to think not what to think applies to every aspect of our lives. From religion, money, politics, education, and more it’s important to know what you think and be confident in that knowledge.
Knowing how to think and make decisions gives you power and confidence.
Here’s the challenge though, most of the time it’s a lot easier to tell people what to think, rather than let them think for themselves.
