How to Turn Your Free Disney Buttons into a Keepsake Ornament

Inside: Turn those free Disney celebration buttons from your trip into fun Keepsake Ornaments for your Christmas tree!

You know those free Disney pins (also called Disney celebration buttons) you can get at both Disneyland and Disney World. We always grab one (or a few!) during our trip. They’re such a fun (and free!) souvenir.

This year I finally turned our collection that’s been sitting in a box into the cutest DIY Disney ornament to remember our magical vacations over the years.

This easy Disney craft takes just a few minutes, costs almost nothing, and becomes a magical keepsake that reminds you of your family’s trips year after year.

Free Disney Buttons

We got our first Disney button when my husband and I went to Disneyland on our honeymoon and our collection has slowly grown as the kids have had first trips, and we’ve celebrated birthdays at the park.

Disney Parks offer these free celebration buttons (often called “Disney pins,”) to help you celebrate special moments during your visit.

You can ask for one any time, and you don’t have to be celebrating something big. They’re completely free and available at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and all four Walt Disney World theme parks.

DIY Disney Ornament Using a Free Disney Pin

Making these ornaments is so fast and easy. I’ve been thinking about doing it for years and now I really wish I would have done it sooner!

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Free Disney celebration button
  • Ribbon (any color you like)
  • Hot glue or strong craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Optional: pliers to remove pin
  • Optional – Marker (I like to write the date on the back of the ornaments!)

How to Make a Disney Pin Ornament (Step-by-Step)

1.Remove the Safety Pin Back (Optional)

Some people prefer to keep the pin backing on, but I removed it. Removing it lets the ornament sit flatter on the tree and I dont’ have to worry about the pin catching on anyone.

Use pliers to gently bend the pin backing off the back of the Disney buttons.

2. Cut a Ribbon Loop

Cut a piece of ribbon about 6–8 inches long, I just folded the ribbon into a loop that looked like the size I wanted and added a little extra to attach it to the Disney button.

3. Glue the Ribbon to the Back

Add a small amount of hot glue to the top center of the back of the button. Press the ribbon ends into the glue to secure.

I found it worked best to glue one side of the ribbon and then add more glue before attaching the other side of the loop.

You can have the ribbon centered on the pin and it looks kind of like a metal would or you can space out the ends of the ribbon to each side of the back of the button for a bigger loop. Pick which look you like best.

4. Decorate Your Ornament

This is where your ornament really becomes a memory keepsake! You can:

  • Write the year of your Disney trip
  • Add your kids’ names (if they aren’t already on the pin)
  • Add a little glitter
  • Stick on Mickey-shaped confetti
  • Add anything else you would like to add

5. Let Dry + Hang on Your Tree

Once the glue is completely dry, your new Disney Parks memory ornament is ready to hang!

My kids were so excited to see these Disney button ornaments and put them on the tree. They kept talking about our Disney trips when they got the pins.

I hope you enjoy making these Disney Button ornaments. I love that now our free buttons from aren’t collecting dust but a fun keepsake ornament we get to see each year on our Christmas tree.
