My kids keep asking when it’s going to snow. I think living in Florida for a while this year has made them worry that it’s not going to snow now that we are back in Maryland. While we haven’t got any snow yet, we are keeping our fingers crossed for a White Christmas and making some melted snowman ornaments to decorate our tree.
Growing up my mom had a melted snowman ornament that I always thought was so cute. Her ornament came from an ornament exchange she did with several other ladies.
So inspired by here cute snowman I decided to make a kid-friendly melted snowman.
That’s right the kids can help make this snowman from start to finish. The older your kids are the more creative they can be with the snowman.
The hardest part of this whole craft is waiting for the snowmen to dry!
Supplies
To make the melted snowman you only need a few supplies:
- White School Glue
- Small Googly Eyes
- Snowman accessories (you can buy little hats and things or you can make them, we used oven-bake clay to make most of our accessories, and a few tiny pompoms)
- Ribbon
- Parchment Paper
How to Make a Melted Snowman Ornament
The Accessories
The first thing we did to make our melted snowman ornaments was to make all the “Accessories”. We used oven-bake clay to make hats, arms, a carrot nose and buttons for our snowmen.
You can make these items the same day you put together your snowmen or you can make them a few days before.
The Hat
Each of our snowmen has a different style of hat. One of them has a classic black top hat, one has a beanie style hat and one has earmuffs. Making the hats was a little tricky for my kids so I ended up making all of the hats while they worked on the buttons.
Top Hat – To make the top hat we made a flat circle of black clay and then a slightly smaller circle that was about 1/4 inch thick. Then we flattened two sides of that circle and stuck it to our flat circle making a little top hat.
Beanie – We made a flat beanie shape out of black clay and then after baking the clay we painted it rose gold. When we put the beanie on the melted snowman we added a tiny pom pom to the top.
Earmuffs – The earmuffs are the easiest hat we made. All we did was make a small c-shape out of black clay. Then when we put them on our snowman we added a tiny pom pom to each side.
The Arms – Most snowmen I know have stick arms so we made little sticks out of clay. Each one looks different and there really isn’t a wrong way to make the arms.
Buttons
The buttons for your snowman are easy to make we used black clay and made tiny circles look like cole.
You could also make even smaller circles to make a mouth for your snowman. Shhhh…Don’t tell anyone but our snowmen don’t have mouths!
Nose
To make the nose I recommend using orange oven-bake clay, but if you don’t have any you can use the clay you have and paint the nose orange after you bake it.
To make the noses we made tiny little rolls of clay and then made one end pointy like a carrot.
Putting Together Your Snowmen Ornaments
First, get a piece of parchment paper for each snowman. Then squeeze/dump the white school glue into the shape you want your snowman to be.
You can make a circle if you want, we did kind of goofy shapes since snowmen don’t typically melt in a perfect circle.
After your glue is spread out grab your snowman accessories and make your snowmen. Be careful putting everything on the wet glue. We found that our google eyes liked to flip over when we set them down if we weren’t careful.
After making your snowman set them in a safe place to dry for the next 24-48 hours. You want the glue to harden and completely dry before peeling it off the parchment paper.
Once your snowman is dry pull it off the parchment paper and attach a ribbon to the back. I used my hot glue gun to attach the ribbons. So technically this part isn’t something I would let me kids do.
Once the ribbon is attached your melted snowman is ready to hang on the tree!
These snowmen make adorable ornaments for your Christmas tree and would also be cute as a little gift.
