One of our favorite Christmas traditions is going to a tree farm and cutting down a Christmas tree each year. We have been getting a fresh tree since our oldest first Christmas and over the years we have learned a few tricks including how to water a Christmas tree easily.

I remember the first year we had a real tree and how hard it was to water the tree.
Every time we needed to add water to the treestand it was such a pain to crawl under the tree with a cup of water to fill the stand. I always ended up spilling water on the floor and knocking of ornaments, not to mention getting poked by pine needles.
With how often a Christmas tree needs more water I knew we needed to find a better way to water the tree.
How to Water a Christmas Tree
After the struggles of keeping enough water in our Christmas tree stand the first year we tried several different ways to water our tree and found a really easy and inexpensive way to water our tree.
There are several products for watering a Christmas tree you can find on amazon but we ended up going with a simple solution instead of purchasing one of those options.
This hack to water your Christmas tree is so easy you are going to love it.
Supplies
- Pitcher
- PVC Pipe
Steps
First, you’re going to need to get your supplies. You’re going to need a pitcher and a piece of PVC pipe that is at least 2 feet long.
Use any pitcher you have in the kitchen, even a large cup would work. Fill your pitcher or cup with water.

Get a piece of PVC pipe – ours is a 2 inch PVC pipe that is about 3 feet long. (the longer the pipe is the less you have to bend).
Once you have your supplies you’re ready to water your Christmas tree.

Take the PVC pipe and put it through the branches of your Christmas tree into the tree stand. Make sure the end of the pipe is in the tree stand or you will get water everywhere.

Once the pipe is inside the tree stand slowly pour water through the PVC. Make sure to keep an eye on your tree stand so you don’t overflow the stand and get water everywhere (yes, we have done this and it’s not fun!)

Now you have a freshly watered Christmas tree without the challenge of crawling under the tree to water it.
Making sure your tree always has water is the best way to keep it from drying out so you can enjoy your tree the whole holiday season.

The only other thing we have done to help keep our Christmas tree fresh is using these Forest Fresh Christmas Tree tablets. I’m not sure if they do a lot or not but our tree typically lasts from the day after Thanksgiving until New Years’ so we are sticking with it.
Once you’re done with your Christmas tree and are ready to haul it outside I highly recommend using a Christmas tree removal bag so you don’t get pine needles all over the house as you take your tree out.
