This color wheel activity is a great way for kids to learn about mixing colors and the primary and secondary colors.
Play doh is such a fun way to practice so many different learning activities this playdough fine motor activities pdf is a great resource for more playdough fun.
Play Doh Color Wheel
Both my toddler and preschooler loved the activity and now they are both pretty good at identifying what colors are made when they mix to colors together.
Plus after we finished our color wheels they played for a good hour with the play-doh, so that is definitely a mom win.
Ok so how did we do this activity? We kept it really simple with supplies we already had around the house.
Supplies:
- Homemade playdoh – not yet colored
- Food coloring
- Paper plate
- Crayons
Color Wheel Activity
For this color wheel activity there are two parts, coloring the play-doh and mixing colors and making a paper plate color wheel.
Before starting the activity I made some homemade playdoh without coloring it and let it cool.

Then I divided a paper plate for each of the kids into a 6 section pie for them to color and make into a color wheel. I used a sharpie to make the lines darker so it was easier for them to see each section. (A ruler makes this part a lot easier, but you can totally free hand it.)
To start we divided the playdoh into 3 balls. We made each ball one of the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). We talked about each color and named a few things that are that color.

Then we colored a the primary color sections of our color wheel. I put a red, yellow or blue line in every other section and then had the kids finish coloring the sections.
After adding the primary colors to the color wheel I gave each of the kids a little ball of playdoh for each color.
Then I gave them a small ball of two of the primary colors (for example red and yellow) and had them guess what color it would make.

Then they mixed the colors together. Once the color was mixed I asked them what two colors mixed together made that color (red + yellow = orange).
I then had them color the section between the two primary colors they mixed the new color. For example between red and yellow they colored the section orange.

After coloring the section the correct color we placed our newly mixed ball of play-doh on that section.
We repeated this step for each of the secondary colors (Purple, Orange and Green).

After completing our color wheel and making all the colors of play-doh the kids had fun mixing more colors together and creating with their play-doh accessories.
If you don’t have any play-doh accessories these are some of our favorite. We keep collecting different accessories and storing them in a plastic tub with the play-doh for easy creative fun.
