There is no denying we all spend several hours of our time each day on our phones. So you might as well use some of that time to make a little money. There are tons of money making apps out there and it can be hard to know what apps are legit and which ones are scams.

All of the apps that I’m sharing in this post I currently use or have used in the past. Not only have I used these apps I have cashed out with each of these apps (some multiple times) for either cash or gift cards.
Best Money Making Apps
There are several different types of money making apps, I’m going to break down these apps into a few categories to make it easier for you to find the apps you want to try.
Money Saving and Cashback Apps
Money saving and cashback apps are the apps I use the most. I consistently cashout these apps every couple of months. When I shop more I can cashout more often.
Rakuten – Get $10 Sign Up Bonus
Rakuten formerly known as Ebates is a great way to get cashback when shopping online. Rakuten is connected with over 2,000 stores.
The best part about Rakuten is that you can get double cashback offers and coupon offers. You can get cashback on all kinds of purchases, things like travel, clothing, home products, baby items, and more.
Join Rakuten and spend $25 shopping through the Rakuten dashboard and get a $10 cash back bonus on top of the percent you get back. Use this link to sign up for this $10 bonus.
Plus refer your friends to Rakuten and make money for each friend who joins and makes a purchase.
How to Use Rakuten
To get the most out of Rakuten make sure you download the app for shopping on your phone. Don’t forget to get the chrome extension on your browser for when your shopping on your computer.

Ibotta
Ibotta is an app I use at least once a month, usually more often, for my Costco and Walmart shopping trips. I shop at Aldi a lot and Ibotta does not partner with them so I can only submit receipts when I shop at other stores.
NEW– Ibotta now allows you to get cashback on Walmart Grocery pick up orders so you can save even more without having to go into the grocery store!
Get the Ibotta app and when setting up your account use a referral code (mine is dbcvtol) to get a sign-up bonus after you redeem your first offer.
Shopkick – Get $5 Now
Shopkick is a cashback app where you get kicks that can be converted into gift cards.
You can collect kicks by walking into select stores and opening the app, scanning specific items in the store and purchasing specific items.
The items you get kicks for scanning and purchasing change frequently.
This app is great if you enjoy wandering stores, it’s a great way to earn some gift cards while enjoying wandering the aisles.
Join Shopkick using code SALE161207 and earn 250 bonus kicks after doing your first walk-in or scan with in 7 days of joining.

Receipt Hog
This app is free to download and easy to use. You simply take a picture of each receipt after shopping. These receipts translate into points in the app and after you reach a specific number of points you can cash out via PayPal or Amazon gift card.
Receipt Hog one of the app I use the most because no matter what I purchase as long as it is at a grocery store I get points. I have cashed out multiple times with this app. It takes a couple of days and I will have either a gift card or money in my Paypal account.
Fetch Rewards
Fetch Rewards works similarly to Receipt Hog in that you can scan a receipt from any store and get points. Plus you can also get bonus points for purchasing specific brands.
Fetch Rewards also has a lot of different reward options. You can redeem points for gift cards to a variety of different stores.
Set up an account using this referral link and get 2,000 points (about $2) for opening your account.
Money Making and Investment Apps
Money making and investing apps are a great way to get free stocks, start investing spare money in the stock market and making money from things you have laying around the house.
Robinhood
Robinhood is my personal favorite investing app and when you join you get a free stock! You can stick with just your free stock or you can add money and start investing in stocks.
The Robinhood app is a great beginner investing app, it has a simple set up and no commission fees.
Plus once you join you can invite your friends and get a free stock for each friend that joins.
Webull
Webull is also an investing app it’s a little more complex than Robinhood but you can get 2 free stocks. You get the first one for signing up and the second one after you deposit $100 to invest.
While the Webull app isn’t my favorite as far as user-friendliness, it’s a great way to get some free stocks you can sell and make money then withdraw the money back to your bank account.

Facebook Marketplace
Facebook marketplace is my favorite selling app. We have made hundreds of dollars selling stuff we no longer need or use on Facebook marketplace.
You can read about how we do it and some tips in this post Selling on Facebook Marketplace.
Survey Apps
I’m personally not a big fan of Survey Apps but there are a couple I use every once in a while. You won’t get rich doing these survey’s but you can make a little extra cash overtime.
I have tried several survey programs in the past, most of them I have found to be a waste of time. The two I have included in this list are my favorite survey apps.
Google Opinion Rewards
Google Opinion Rewards is an app that I recently started using. While I haven’t gotten many surveys, the ones I have received have taken 1 minute or less.
I find the app worth it because the surveys are so easy and fast. It takes time for the money to add up, but then you can cash out for PayPal credit or Google Play credit.
Swagbucks
Swagbucks was one of the first money making/cash back apps to be created.
With Swagbucks there are numerous ways to earn cash. Swagbucks has over 1,500 retail partners including Target, Walmart and Amazon. Use the SwagButton to make sure you get the best deals, coupons and promos.
Along with cashback you can earn Swagbucks by playing games, answering surveys, watching ads and printing coupons.
