24 Fun Toddler Spring Activities

Spring is here and we are finally getting a few warm days mixed with the cold ones. This year the weather has been crazy in our area! We are so excited to get warm days so it’s easier to play outside and go exploring. Bring on the spring activities!

Since our move, the kids have been watching more tv than I would like so it’s time to cut back on screen time and spend more time playing and exploring.

Below is our Spring (Screen Free) Bucket List for this year. It includes both indoor and outdoor activities since we never know what the weather is going to be like. Some of these activities are things we will do multiple times others are a bigger activity/adventure.

Our Bucket List of Spring Activities

The activities included in our spring bucket list are focused on toddlers. Since we currently have 2 of them.

#1 Blow Bubbles

My kids love blowing bubbles, Miss E gets so excited when she see’s bubbles and does the cutest little dance, with her arms moving as fast as possible. Turning on some music and having a bubble dance party is one of our favorite rainy day activities.

#2 Play at the Park

This one is probably obvious, kids love the park. Our problem is that we get in a rut and only go to the same park. This spring and summer I want to try to explore different parks in our area.

#3 Fly a Kite

Flying a kite is fun even as an adult, but watching the excitement my little people get when they get to hold the string with the kite soring in the air is amazing.  Flying a kite is a great way to see the wonder of childhood on your toddlers face.

#4 Draw with Chalk

Chalk the messy art of childhood. Giving toddlers chalk and a blank driveway is a great way to encourage creativity. I love it when my toddlers explain to me what they are drawing. (Yes, the scribbles I see are boats, cars, dogs and more to them.)

#5 Plant Seeds

We finally have a backyard so I’m really excited to grow a garden this year. Planting seeds with my 3-year-old have been a fun learning experience. It takes hand-eye coordination to get the seeds in the hole we have dug and patience to see the plants start to grow.

#6 Play in the Dirt

One of my favorite memories from growing up is playing in the dirt and mud. I remember getting covered in mud and having to get hosed off with freezing water before my mom would let me in the house.

I think it’s so important to let our kids get dirty playing outside, even though the thought of cleaning up the mess sometimes makes me reconsider.

#7 Play with Water

Water is one of my kids’ favorite activities, they love playing the bathtub, kiddie pool, puddles, and sinks. My favorite thing about letting my kids play with water is that it is a lot easier to clean up than when they play in the mud. (Yes, water play happens a lot more often than mud play at our house.) Also, have you seen the cool water tables that make it so easy for kids to play with water?

#8 Go for a Walk

Walking trails and even a walk around the neighborhood is a simple way to get the whole family outside!

#9 Bake Something

The little man loves to help me in the kitchen. Baking cookies is his absolute favorite thing to do, so we try to bake something a couple times a month.

Going on a Hike is a great way to get kids out in Nature. #kids #toddleractivities #hiking
Hiking Cunningham Falls

#10 Go on a Hike

There are so many easy to moderate trails that even young toddlers can hike, with little to no assistance. Last year we hiked Cunningham Falls here in Maryland with our 2-year-old and 6-month-old. For weeks after our hike every time we got in the car the little man would ask to “hike a waterfall”.

#11 Make Ice Cream in a Bag

Pinterest has some fun recipes for Ice Cream in a Bag that we are excited to try.

#12 Play with Water Balloons

Ok, so this activity might not work if spring is cooler where you live. We tend to have cool days but also some days in the high 70’s and mid 80’s so water play totally works on those days.

#13 Have a Picnic

My little boy loves it when we take food with us on hikes or to the park so we can have a picnic. There is just something so fun about eating outside.

#14 Read Stories Outside

Reading to kids is so important, taking the stories outside adds a fun and different element to daily storytime.

#15 Pick Dandelions

I don’t know why but it seems that dandelions are my little mans favorite “flower”. It might be because they are all over, but he loves picking them and smelling them before giving them to me.

#16 Play Sports

I was surprised that for even young toddlers there are organized sports teams. Right now we aren’t ready for that so we just stick with playing soccer, basketball, and football in the backyard. We are working on kicking, catching and throwing skills.

#17 Play with Play-Doh

When Little Sister takes her nap one of the little man’s favorite things to do is play with play-doh. He loves to make snakes and use cookie cutters to make different shapes.

#18 Build with Blocks

Building towers and knocking them down is still a favorite at our house. Since both of my kids are still young we use Mega Bloks to build our towers. Go here for a comparison of Mega Blok’s vs. Lego Duplo.

Playing with trains encourages imagination and creativity

#19 Play with Trains

Building tracks and playing with trains is a great activity that helps my kids’ problem solve and learn to share. We love the wooden train tracks and the battery operated trains are a fun addition to regular trains that you have to push.

#20 Do a Craft

Crafts are so fun with toddlers, they never turn out how I expect, but my kids have so much fun creating.

#21 Build a Fort

Building a fort with blankets is something every child should do. Yes, it creates a mess and hard to navigate room but it teaches your kids to problem solve and encourages imagination.

#22 Have a Dance Party

Turn up the music and dance around the room. I’m sure that if someone looked in our playroom during our dance parties they would think I’m a total dork. But it gets my kids laughing and it creates a fun memory.

#23 Go to Storytime

Check your public library and other stores (ie. pottery barn kids, Barns & Noble, etc.) and see if they have a free storytime.

#24 Plan a Playdate

Playdates are a great way for both the kids and the parents to socialize. It’s a great way for toddlers to learn how to play together and make friends.

  1. love these, very similar to the things I have been planning to do with our 2 year old grandson and his little sister of 9 months. She loves to watch him be so active.

  2. Love this list! Can’t wait for the weather to be a little better to do a picnic! We’ve done bubbles this spring…it’s amazing how much entertainment a container of liquid can provide! Thanks for sharing!

    1. We can’t wait for it to get warmer, we have done a few indoor picnics while we wait for the weather to play nice! Haha! Bubbles are amazing, I have stopped so many tantrums and meltdowns with those little containers of liquid. It’s like liquid gold for parents!

  3. Great list of ideas! If you aren’t intentional life gets busy too fast and our children grow up too fast. Good job spending time together!
