At the start of our school year, I love talking about some basic American history with my kids. This year we are starting the year talking about different American symbols like the Statue of Liberty.
The Statue of Liberty is one of 5 well-known American symbols we are going to learn about.
I like to keep my kid’s lessons as hands-on as possible when we’re learning together. While we will do some worksheets for this unit we will also read, watch movies and even do a science experiment as we learn about the Statue of Liberty.
Learning About the Statue of Liberty

To start off our learning we read some books about it and then I found a couple of short videos on youtube that explained a little bit about the history and some fun facts.

There is also an Art for Kids Hub about drawing the Statue of Liberty that is a lot of fun for kids and a great way to add art into the lesson.
Book List
There are a lot of books out there about the Statue of Liberty. We really liked reading aloud the What is the Statue of Liberty? (See book on Amazon) We also got a few other picture book from the local library to read as part of our unit.
Other Activities
There are so many other activities that you could include as part of this unit, including arts and crafts, worksheets, a virtual tour or even a field trip.
Another fun activity we did was a science experiment. We learned about why pennies turn green and tied it into why the statue turned green. You can get the printable and instructions for the Turn a Penny Green Experiment here.
