Fun and Easy Fizzing Colors Science Activity (For Kids)

Did you ever play with baking soda and vinegar as a kid?

I remember doing baking soda and vinegar science activities using balloons or rubber gloves. While those types of experiments are a lot of fun I wanted to do something a little bit different.

So we I came up with this fizzing colors science activity to do with my kindergartner and preschooler.

My kids love doing science experiments and activities, so I’m always trying to find fun and easy new activities for them to do.

This fizzing colors science activity is the perfect activity for the kids to do as part of their homeschool or as a fun at-home science activity.

it’s the perfect preschool or kindergarten science activity that is quick and easy to do and you probably already have everything you need.

Supplies

  • Metal or glass dish
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring
  • Dropper or plastic syringe (my kids love using the plastic syringe more than the dropper)

Fizzing Color Activity

To make your fizzing container use any container you want. We have used disposable casserole dishes from the dollar store before, this time we used glass 9 x 13 pans.

Just make sure the container has a large amount of surface area and it’s metal or glass so that the food coloring doesn’t dye it.

Put a layer of baking soda across the bottom of the container. Our containers had varying thicknesses of baking soda since I’m not very great at getting a consistently even layer.

Next, get a few small bowls/cups and fill them with white vinegar. Using food coloring make one bowl of vinegar for each color you want to use.

Give your kids a dropper and/or a plastic syringe and let them have some fun dropping the vinegar onto the baking soda. They will love watching it all the colors fizz!

Not only will they get to have fun watching the colored vinegar make the baking soda fizz they will be able see the colors change as they mix them together.

The Science Behind this Experiment

While doing this science activity with your kids it’s a great time to talk about chemical reactions.

When baking soda and vinegar mix they create a chemical reaction that produces a carbon dioxide gas. This chemical reaction is what causes the fizzing when you drop the vinegar onto the baking soda.

This fizzing colors science activity would go along great with the Magic School Bus episode Get Ready, Set, Dough (season 1 episode 9) which teaches about chemical reactions that happen when cooking.
