These easy Halloween sugar cookies are a delightful addition to any spooky celebration.
With a little creativity, a touch of magic and some help from little hands, you can create a batch of treats that will leave everyone bewitched.

My kids love helping in the kitchen and one of their favorite things to help make is of course cookies.
For Halloween we love making Halloween Sugar Cookies.
Halloween Sugar Cookies
Sugar cookies are such a fun recipe to make with kids, it’s like playing playdoh and getting to eat the end result.
Of course, getting to decorate the cookies after their done baking with frosting and sprinkles is often the best part.
Easy Soft Halloween Sugar Cookies
I grew up using this sugar cookie recipe and baking these cookies with my mom and siblings and now it’s so fun to be able to bake with my kids using the same recipe.
This Halloween sugar cookie recipe is easy to follow and perfect for making with little helpers.
The cookies are soft and delicious even without the frosting!

When mixing cookie dough I love using my bosch mixer to make it quick and easy. You can mix with a hand mixer or by hand if you would like. The dough is stiff so be prepared for that.

The kids love helping measure and add all of the ingredients as we make these Halloween sugar cookies.
Little helpers adds to the mess in the kitchen but it’s so fun to let them help.
Plus baking is a great learning activity. Kids get to practice math, reading, and science in real life!
Sour Cream Halloween Sugar Cookie Recipe
The fact that this Halloween sugar cookie recipe is so simple, is probably why I love it so much.
First mix together the sugar, egg, butter, vanilla, and sour cream.
I let the kids dump everything in the mixer then turn it on for a quick mix.

Then add flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix together the dough and beat for 2 minutes.
After mixing the dough you can chill it for about 30 minutes to make it easier to work with, but it still works great without taking the time to chill.
Now for the fun part. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and have fun cutting out shapes.

I think the pumpkin shape is my favorite for Halloween sugar cookies, but we have fun with all the shapes: witches hats, ghosts, brooms, cats and more.
After cutting out the cookies bake for about 8 minutes at 350°. Bigger cookies may take longer to bake.
Let cookies cool for a few minutes on the cookie sheet before moving to a cooling rack.
Decorating Halloween Sugar Cookies
Now for my kid’s favorite part of making these Halloween cookies, the frosting, and sprinkles.
Sometimes I love trying to decorate the cookies like I see on Pinterest and Instagram but most of the time we just have fun.
To decorate our sugar cookies I use a simple decorating frosting (the recipe is included on the recipe card below).
Sometimes I use store-bought frosting to keep it simple and have one less thing to make.

For our Halloween sugar cookies, we got some candy eyes as well as regular sprinkles that were perfect for decorating our cookies.
I’m pretty sure the candy eyes were my kids favorite part of these Halloween sugar cookies and it made them look so cute.
Tips for Perfect Halloween Sugar Cookies:
- Chill the Dough: This dough doesn’t have to be chilled but can be easier to work with if you chill it.
- Flour Your Surface: A well-floured surface will prevent the dough from sticking and make rolling out much easier.
- Make Dough Ahead: Sometimes it’s nice to make the dough one day and bake the cookies the next. This recipe works great for that.
- Experiment with Shapes: Use a variety of Halloween-themed cookie cutters to create a diverse set of cookies.
- These cookies freeze really well. So if you want to have a big baking day and make a bunch of cookies and freeze them to enjoy throughout the whole month of October, this is a great recipe to use.
These simple Halloween sugar cookies are the perfect addition to a boo basket, a fall party or a treat to eat at home.
