Almost 2 years ago I was pregnant and ended up having a miscarriage. I had no idea how different it would be to have a pregnancy after a miscarriage.

My miscarriage was totally unexpected. It was my third pregnancy and I didn’t have any symptoms.
From my experience, most people had miscarriages before their first baby and then they didn’t usually have any problems. Now I realize that’s not quite how it works.
Pregnancy after a Miscarriage
Because of my experience with my miscarriage, my current pregnancy has been a little different than my first two.
More Worry
Going into this pregnancy I had no idea how different it would be to have a pregnancy after a miscarriage compared to my first two pregnancies. There are so many little things I didn’t worry about with those two pregnancies that I have worried about this time.
Things like going to that first doctor’s appointment, when the baby will start moving, and any little pain/discomfort or lack of it has caused a lot more worry than it should.
First Doctors Appointment
Going to the first doctor’s appointment with this pregnancy I had a lot of mixed feelings. I was excited and wanted to know that everything was okay, but I was also worried because it was at my first appointment with the last pregnancy we discovered everything wasn’t all right.
After getting an ultrasound at that first appointment and hearing the baby’s heartbeat it was a great experience. That appointment helped me know that everything was okay at that point and that I didn’t need to worry so much.

Questioning Symptoms
With my first two pregnancies, I didn’t really worry about having or not having pregnancy symptoms.
I didn’t really experience morning sickness with those pregnancies, but I did with the one I miscarried. So when I had a couple of days of morning sickness with this time around it made me worry.
Again when I didn’t feel the baby moving as soon as I thought I should it caused me to worry, but everything was fine. I just needed to wait a little longer since I carry my babies toward my back. With my other two, I didn’t worry about when I would start feeling them move.
Doctors Appointments
Doctor’s appointments and especially the ultrasounds are always the best part of pregnancy. Seeing your little one and hearing their heartbeat is always so comforting.
During pregnancy after a miscarriage, those appointments are even more comforting.

Announcing the Pregnancy
With each pregnancy, we have announced at a different time. With the pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage, we announced the pregnancy the earliest. So with this pregnancy following the miscarriage I was more hesitant to announce it even to family.
We ended up waiting until after our first ultrasound and finding out everything was good to tell anyone. You can read about how we announced this pregnancy here.
There really is no right or wrong time to announce your pregnancy it’s really up to you and what you want to do.
Hope and Excitement
With this pregnancy at first, I had a hard time letting myself get too excited. I was worried that something would go wrong, but having hope and getting excited is such an important part of pregnancy.
While there is always the chance something can go wrong there is also the chance that things will go right. I found that having hope and faith is an important part of being pregnant after a miscarriage.

Taking weekly pictures sharing pregnancy updates has been a fun way to be hopeful and excited about this pregnancy. You can follow along this pregnancy journey on Instagram.
Now that I’m over halfway through this pregnancy it feels a lot more like my pregnancies with my first two. I feel the baby move each day and each appointment has gone well. I don’t worry as much about something being wrong and instead I’m able to enjoy the pregnancy.
