We recently spent some time in Rockaway Beach, Oregon for a family reunion. The beach town along the Oregon Coast is a 2-hour drive from Portland.
The small town of Rockaway Beach has only a few small stores and restaurants. Other than a quick trip to Flamingo Jim’s to get beach towels (which we forgot to bring), we spent our time at the beach.

The Beach
We loved the small town feel of Rockaway Beach, we really loved how deserted the beach was. We expected the beach to be crowded in the middle of July, but for the most part we had the beach to ourselves.
The ocean water was COLD even though it was the end of July. (Maybe we are just used to warm water during the summer in Ocean City.) The cool temperature didn’t stop our two-year-old from having a blast playing in the water.
Jared and I took turns chasing the little man in the water, if the water stayed below my knees it wasn’t too bad. The little guy had no qualms about getting totally soaked.
Along with playing in the water we had fun flying kites, playing in the sand, roasting s’mores and visiting with family.
Places to Stay in Rockaway Beach
Rockaway Beach doesn’t have a lot of hotel option, but there are a number of vacation rentals. Hotels.com has a number of different options listed. There are also options on Vacasa (we stayed in this one) and VRBO.
Things to do near Rockaway Beach
While staying in Rockaway Beach we did a couple of day trips, to hunt for sand dollars and explore on bikes in Seaside and to taste cheese at the Tillamook Cheese Factory.

I have never been to Oregon. My husband and I have this crazy dream to visit all 50 states with our girls before they graduate college. We will have to keep this beach in mind when it is time to head towards Oregon!
This was my first trip to Oregon and it was so fun! That is an awesome you guys want to visit all 50 states. It’ so fun to make memories as a family exploring.
