The Tillamook Cheese Factory visitor center is closed until 2018, but don’t worry. If you have trip planned before the new visitor center opens, there is a temporary visitor center in the big red barn on the property.
On our weekend trip to Oregon we went to the Cheese Factory 3 times. It’s a good thing the factory is only a short drive from Rockaway Beach.
Temporary Visitor Center
As you enter the barn visitor center it can be confusing to know which direction to go. I would recommend going to the right toward the Tillamook Cheese bus. This is an awesome place to take some fun pictures.
Continuing from the bus is a room with information about milk production and the Tillamook factory. The next area is cheese tasting. There is a cheese bar with 6(ish) different cheeses to taste. The types of cheese sampled change. Each time we visited we got to try one or two new flavors.
At the end of the cheese bar you are in the gift shop are. Here you can purchase everything from cheese curds and ice cream to clothing and home decor.
As you explore the gift shop area along with the souvenir items (Our favorite souvenir was the pressed penny) there is also a fresh served ice cream area. Each time we visited the line to get ice cream was long, and we ended up getting the cartons of ice cream they had for sale. This ended up saving us money and giving us more ice cream.
The ice cream menu has some limited time flavors. When we were visiting marionberry cheesecake was one of the special flavors. It was amazing! If you have the chance try it!
If your planning to visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory plan on spending 45 minutes to 1 hour to see everything and get a yummy treat.
We were so glad that the temporary visitor center was open when we visited Oregon. Now we need to plan another trip when the new visitor center will be open.
Tips for Visiting the Tillamook Cheese Factory with Kids
Tillamook is the perfect place to bring the family. With fun displays and yummy treats, it’s perfect for all ages. Here are a few tips from our trip to the Temporary Tillamook Cheese Factory.
Don’t bring the stroller
It was really busy when we visited and maneuvering a stroller can be difficult.
Consider a carton of Ice Cream
A carton of ice cream can be cheaper and faster than waiting for an ice cream cone. They even have spoons at the checkout counter!
Smash a Penny
Smashing pennies is one of the little man’s favorite things to do when we travel. It’s a fun and inexpensive souvenir.
