We are almost to the middle of March which means that St. Patrick’s Day is almost here and then the first day of spring! Last week the kids and I made this simple watercolor rainbow garland and it turned out so cute.
I love decorating our fireplace by hanging seasonal garlands and decorating the mantel. Plus the kids love having their crafts displayed for everyone to see.

If you don’t have a fireplace you can easily hang the garlands on the wall in a living room or bedroom. Garlands are a simple way to add a fun colorful or holiday touch to any room.
This rainbow garland is the perfect way to decorate for St. Patrick’s Day, spring or a rainbow-themed party.
Rainbow Garland
The garland is super easy to make you only need a few simple supplies and you’re ready to go!
Supplies
- Watercolors (paints, water, and brush)
- Scissors
- printable rainbows
Watercolor Rainbows
The printable sheet of rainbows has 8 small rainbows on it. To start off I cut the page in half so there were two strips of 4 rainbows.
It was a lot easier for my kids to manage painting 4 rainbows than all 8. Plus we only need 8-10 rainbows for the size of garland we are making.
We have a couple of sets of inexpensive Crayola watercolors that work great for our little crafts.
The kids had a lot of fun painting their rainbows. My son wanted all red rainbows so he painted his one color. My daughter painted her rainbows a mix of colors, a few of them following the lines, but mostly a mix of colors all around.
The rainbows I painted actually included all the colors typically found in a rainbow.
Side Note: I have recently started doing the same crafts as my kids but doing my own. I have found that by doing the same project they are doing they are more willing to try to do it on their own. If I’m just supervising they want help with everything. So it’s been a great way for them to be more independent in our projects.
Depending on your children’s ages you might be able to get a rainbow with all the colors in the right order, but even if the rainbows are a solid color or a mix, they still look adorable.
After we finished painting and letting the pages dry, I cut out the rainbows. It was a little too challenging a cut for my kids to do successfully.
After cutting out all the rainbows we used our mini clothespins to hang our watercolor rainbows from twine along our mantel.
I love how these rainbows turned out. They are small, have pastel colors and are perfect for these almost spring days.
