10 Fun Ways to Celebrate Valentines at Home (with Kids)

Staying home for Valentines doesn’t have to be boring. Make the holiday fun for the whole family with these fun ideas of ways to celebrate Valentines at home.

I can’t believe Valentine’s Day is this weekend and while many people like to go out to celebrate Valentine’s Day we typically stay in. That’s right we celebrate Valentine’s at home…most of the time.

We went out for Valentine’s during the first couple years of our marriage and places were always so busy and crowded. We quickly decided we would rather spend our Valentine’s Day at home and plan a night out on pretty much any other day.

Now years later we have multiple kids and celebrating Valentine’s Day at home is a fun family tradition.

How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Home

Even if you’re just celebrating Valentine’s day at home this year there are a lot of fun things you can do to make the holiday fun for the whole family.

Decorate

We all know how fun decorations are, especially to kids. So have fun decorating for Valentine’s day and your party at home.

We made these huge brown paper bag snowflakes as part of our valentine’s decorations and the kids loved it! (don’t worry they are really easy to make and look impressive!)

Have a Valentines Themed Breakfast

Start out Valentine’s Day with a fun love and heart themed breakfast. Heart-shaped cinnamon rolls, waffles, or pancakes with a side of strawberries are a fun and simple idea. Or you could always get a box of Valentine donuts from your favorite donut shop.

Making breakfast “Valentine’s Day themed” doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Just shape things like hearts or pick foods that are red or pink.

Play Games

Play a Valentine’s day themed game or play a family favorite, or even better do both!

We have had a lot of fun playing this Conversation Heart Race Minute to Win It Game for Valentine’s and you can easily play it several different ways.

Snack and Draw

Have you heard of the popular sip and paint art classes? While this is a family-friendly at-home version of that class/date night.

Grab some snacks or even make a fun valentines charcuterie board and get ready to draw. There are a few different options for your snack and draw activity.

Art For Kids Hub

If you’re wanting a traditional drawing class there are a lot of different drawing classes on youtube so take your pick.

We really like the Art for Kids Hub classes since there are tons of fun drawing options and he does an amazing job of showing kids how to draw. You can pick to draw something Valentine themed or not it’s totally up to you , they have a ton of different options of things to draw.

Valentines Color By Number

Another fun option that doesn’t involve as much drawing but instead requires more coloring is valentines coloring pages and color by number pages. My kids love to color, color by number pages and I love creating them and sharing them as free printables with you. You can get several different Valentine themed color by number pages for free here.

Make Valentines Snacks and Desserts

A holiday just wouldn’t be a holiday without some special snacks or desserts. So pick a recipe or two and have fun making some delicious treats.

Our favorite valentines treat to make is chocolate-dipped strawberries. We have also had a lot of fun making big Rice Krispy Treat Kisses to share with friends and eat ourselves.

Make Valentines Crafts

Pull out the craft supplies and make a craft or two. We have made several Valentine-themed crafts and one of our favorites is the Climbing Heart Monster.

The Climbing Heart Monster is quick and easy to make and is not only a fun craft but also an activity the kids will love playing with.

Another fun craft to make is this Pom Pom Love Monster, it goes along perfectly with reading some of our favorite valentines books.

Have a Fun Dinner

Now let’s talk about dinner. Having a fun dinner looks different for each family and honestly, each year probably looks a little different. For dinner, you could order takeout from a favorite restaurant, make a favorite homemade meal, or even do fondue.

We have done all of these things for dinner before and they are all fun. So figure out what will work best for your family and have fun with it.

Watch a Movie

We love watching movies together as a family so cuddling up and watching a movie together (even if it’s a short one) is always a lot of fun.

Read Stories Together

Reading with our kids is something both my husband and I do each day. I typically read with them during the day and he reads with them before bed.

This week leading up to Valentine’s day we have been reading some Valentine’s picture books along with other family favorites.

Put the Kids to Bed and Have Fun Date at Home

After doing fun family activities with the kids for Valentine’s day put them to bed and have a fun date night at home. For us, this usually means cuddling together and watching a favorite show (either Brooklyn 99 or The Office).

There are tons of different at-home date nights you could do so don’t feel like you have to be lazy like us (haha).

Date night in with the hubby

We have done subscription date night boxes in the past and they are a lot of fun if that’s something you want to try. Or you can just search on Pinterest for some fun at-home date night ideas and you will find HUNDREDS of ideas (I try to save ideas to my Marriage board on Pinterest frequently)

Well, I’m sure there are countless more things you could do to celebrate Valentine’s Day I hope these ideas get you thinking and help you have a fun Valentine’s day.
