This fall we have been learning about apples and the kids have been doing some really fun apple themed activities. To go along with all of our apple activities we had to do some painting with apples.
When I have seen others talking about apple painting they often talk about how it’s a great activity for preschoolers. While yes I know preschoolers would love it, I also think that slightly older kids will also still enjoy painting with apples.
Apple painting is the perfect activity for kids of all ages to enjoy after going apple picking, as a fun fall family activity, or as part of a fall or apple unit.
Painting with Apples
There are so many ways that you can do apple painting and honestly, it’s just figuring out what will work best for you and the kids you’re doing the activity with. I’m going to share what worked well for me as I did this fun activity with my preschooler and 1st grader.

-Forks

How to Paint with Apples
The first step to apple painting (or apple stamping as I guess you could call it)is to get your apples ready. I found it worked the best to cut the apples in half. You can cut them in half in either direction. I cut them across so you could see the star and the apples were a circular shape.
After you have the apples cut I found it worked a lot better to stab the apples with a fork so the kids had something to hold on to as they painted with their apples.
Once I had the apples cut and ready with forks as handles I took all of the craft supplies outside so clean up would be quick and easy.
I had a big roll of brown paper left from some of our house projects and I took a big piece out to the driveway. The kids searched for rocks to hold the paper down and then we were ready to start.
I used water-based paint so I didn’t have to worry about the kids getting the paint on their clothes. I put a good amount of paint on a paper plate for each color and then let the kids have fun painting.
At first, they did more of a stamp with the apples, but then they started using the apples like a brush and stamping. The kids had a great time mixing colors creating pictures and getting messy.
You can easily do this project inside and with regular size paper, you don’t have to head outside or use crazy big pieces of paper.
Honestly painting with apples can be done however you want. But I will say I much prefer hosing paint off my driveway than cleaning it up from all over my kitchen.
