It’s no surprise the new year is full of resolutions. People are busy reflecting on different areas of life and making new goals. A common new year’s goal is to work out more and live a healthy lifestyle.
Whether you’re aiming to tone your body or just want to feel confident wearing a black dress, everyone wants to achieve their own version of a healthy workout routine.

Staying in a healthy routine can be hard. If you’re working full-time, a hands-on mom or someone who loves to travel more than anything, it can be easy for your workouts to plateau. Keep reading to find ways that not only keep you in a healthy lifestyle but keep your workouts as effective as possible.
Buy a New Workout Wardrobe
There’s nothing like having a new and cute workout wardrobe to keep you motivated. If you have outdated workout clothes, consider donating them and buy a new wardrobe instead.
By no means does this mean you have to shell out hundreds of dollars on new clothes. When going the secondhand route, you can find high-quality brands like Lululemon workout wear for less. Not only will buying secondhand allow yourself to get durable new workout clothes for a much cheaper price point but you’ll also be helping the environment and making your carbon footprint smaller.
Along with making sure your wardrobe is workout-ready, it’s also key that you’re wearing high-quality sneakers. Many don’t think twice about their footwear but having the proper shoes can only help make your workout and recovery more effective.
Do your research before buying new footwear to see which kind of sneaker will be most practical to your needs. Depending on the shape of your foot, some brands may be better to consider than others.

Curate a Workout Playlist
Music plays a huge role in our lives. We find ourselves listening to music as we work, on our commute to the office, even when we’re cooking and cleaning. It only makes sense to enjoy music as you work out as well.
If you don’t have a designated workout playlist, create one! While there’s nothing wrong with listening to playlists that have already been created, such as those on Spotify, it makes a huge difference when listening to music you personally love the most.
Go through your favorite songs that pump you up and will keep you motivated. If you’re a fan of doing different workouts, create separate playlists for each kind of workout.
Music that you listen to while doing yoga will be different from what you listen to as you’re doing intense cardio. If you’re unsure as to what kind of music you should add, look toward epic songs to spice up your workouts!
If you’re not one for listening to music, instead find a podcast or a show that will keep you interested in completing your workouts. Having some form of activity to focus on as you’re working out will help pass time and be a healthy distraction.
Pick Exercises You Enjoy
While working out can be fun for some, it can also be extremely stressful and taxing on others. If the latter, it’s imperative to find workouts that you actually enjoy.
Finding exercises that you can look forward to will be key in your success. If you’re a busy person and barely find enough time to go to the gym, simply going on a 30-minute walk every day will help to make a difference.
Testing out different kinds of workouts is a great first step in figuring out some of your favorite kinds of physical activity. If you’ve never really tried running long distances, try it out! If you think pilates could be the route for you, give it a shot.

You never know what exercises will keep you entertained. Along with that, part of keeping yourself entertained will depend on whether or not you prefer group classes or going solo.
Many have found comfort and success in group classes as you’re not only working alongside others but you’re also being told exactly what to do and how long to do it.
Nowadays, gyms are making workout classes only more and more fun. From Orangetheory Fitness to aerial classes, there are now multiple creative routes you can take that are in a group setting and fun.
Get Your Sleep!
This is an easy step for anyone who loves to sleep. Having a regular and healthy sleep schedule is key in making your workouts effective. If you’re absolutely exhausted, your workout and the entire day will suffer from it.
Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep in order to effectively function for the next day. If you’re planning on working out in the morning, make sure to go to bed early to get enough sleep in order to effectively workout in the morning.

If you’d like to sleep in a little extra every day, pack your workout bag, your lunch bag, and have the next day’s outfit prepared before going to bed the night before. Doing so will make your mornings go by a lot easier and will allow you to sleep in for at least 10 more minutes.
Celebrate Progress!
No matter what your resolutions are or what your end goal is, make sure to celebrate any and all progress you’ve made.
It’s easy for us to be hard on ourselves but it’s important to remember that even trying and attempting to live a healthier lifestyle is something to be celebrated.
Did you go to the gym 4 days in a row? Enjoy a delicious meal of your choice. Have you been eating healthy lunches for the whole week? Treat yourself to something of your choice.
Celebrating and rewarding yourself will not only make yourself feel good but it will be a great incentive to keep going. Whether it’s treating yourself to a mani-pedi or allowing yourself a cheat meal every now and then, make sure to be kind to yourself throughout the process to keep you happy and motivated!
