“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision”
-Helen Keller
I love thinking about the future and visualizing how I want things to be. I love to dream about how I want our financial situation to be, what trips I want to go on and everything in between.
Having a clear vision of what we want the future to bring makes it easier to set goals and make those dreams and visualizations a reality.
An awesome way to keep those visions and dreams in mind is to create a vision board.
Many people create vision boards usin poster board and gluing photos to it for things they want to accomplish in a specific time frame. Often these boards are for six months to a year.
A Vision Board that Grows and Changes
Don’t get me wrong a poster board vision board is great, but I really wanted something that would grow and change as my vision changes and as I achieve goals.
So I created this DIY Rustic vision board that you can easily change what it displays. As you accomplish goals you can remove them and add new ones. If your goals and vision change you can remove things and add things to your vision board as you would like.
DIY Rustic Vision Board
This DIY Rustic Vision Board is fast and easy to make!
Supplies Needed:
- 2x3x8 Board (Cut into 4 pieces measuring 23″)
- Sandpaper/ Electric Sander
- Stain (I love the color of
MinWax Dark Walnut 2716) - Drill
- 4″ Screws
- Staple Gun
- Jute Rope
- Mini Clothespins
Building the Frame
The first part of this project is to get the frame built. I decided to do a rustic frame so it was all straight edges and quick to put together.
The only supply I had to purchase for this project was the wood. I had everything else from previous projects.
Cut the wood
We have circular saw so we measured and marked the wood into 4 pieces measuring 23″ inches and cut it at home. If you don’t want to cut the wood at home you can get it cut when you purchase the wood at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
Sand each board
After cutting the boards to the correct length I quickly sanded each board until it was smooth using my electric sander. You can easily just use sandpaper but it will take longer to get the wood smooth.
Putting the Frame together
After sanding the boards I placed them on the floor into a frame shape and picked the best looking side of wood for the front. Be sure to check for the brightly colored stamps that are often put on wood. I wanted those on the back!
with my husbands help we used the 4″ screws to attach the boards to each other making a frame. If you can it’s a lot easier to use gravity when screwing the boards together so have someone help you hold the frame as you screw it together.
Stain the Wood
After the frame was put together I stained it. You could easily stain the wood before putting the frame together it’s totally up to you.
After staining the wood let the frame dry.
Clothesline
To create the “Clothesline” inside the frame I used twisted Jute Rope since I like how it adds to the rustic look. I started by stapling the Jute to the back of the frame securely and tying a knot in the jute as well so it wouldn’t pull through the staples.
Then I wrapped the Jute around to the side of the frame and stapled it to the side and then pulled it across to the other side of the frame and held it tight and stapled it.
Go back and forth several times to create multiple “Clotheslines”. If a staple doesn’t go in tight and flat against the wood, grab a hammer and gently tap it further into the wood.
Hanging the Frame
If you want you can use a picture hanging kit to attach the sawtooth hangers to the back of your frame. Or you can simply use nails inside the top corners of the frame to hang it.
Creating Your Vision
Now that your frame is complete it’s time to dream. Find pictures and items to represent things you want to accomplish this year or even more long term if you would like.
Make lists, use quotes and photos to make your vision board interesting. Use the space inside the frame to hang things that will keep you motivated and inspired to keep working to accomplish your dream.
Make sure to hang your vision board in a spot you see multiple times a day.
