Inside: How to make a fun and easy popsicle stick pencil door hanger for back to school.
These popsicle stick pencils are quick and easy to make perfect for decorating a classroom or making a pencil door hanger for back to school.
You can hang this door hanger on a door in your house, on the front door or give it to your students teacher.
This door hanger would also look cute in back to school photos.
While back to school season isn’t always my favorite (summer always seems to go so fast!) this fun popsicle stick pencil back to school craft does help me feel a little bit more excited.

Popsicle Stick Pencil Craft
I had all the supplies on hand to make these popsicle stick pencils but if you need to purchase supplies you should be able to get everything you need at the Dollar Store or Walmart for around $5.
Supplies for the Popsicle Stick Pencil Door Hanger
- 3-4 Popsicle Sticks Per Pencil (I used some regular popsicle sticks and some smaller craft sticks) These are really cheap at the dollar store or in a big box at Walmart
- 1 Unpainted Popsicle Stick for Each Pencil
- Yellow and Pink Paint
- Tiny Strip of Tin Foil
- Cardboard (I us
- Twine/ribbon I got this at the Dollar Store
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue (super glue or school glue )
Making the Back to School Door Hanger
The first step in making this fun back to school door hanger is deciding how many pencils you are going to make and what sizes.
For my door hanger I made 2 small pencils and 3 large ones. You’ll also want to decide how big you want your pencils to be.
I made my small pencils 3 mini craft sticks wide and the large ones 4 popsicle sticks wide.
How to Make a Popsicle Stick Pencil
The first step to making your pencil is painting the popsicle sticks.
Paint Popsicle Sticks
I started by painting all but the last 1/4ish inch of the sticks yellow. Let the yellow paint dry.
Once the yellow paint is dry paint the small remaining end of the popsicle sticks pink. It’s ok if the pink slightly overlaps the yellow as you’ll cover this part with tin foil.
After the paint dries you’re ready to put your pencils together.
Glue It Together
Line up your popsicle sticks with the painted side down.
Glue the popsicle sticks together. I found that hot gluing along the sticks on the back works well. I also added a popsicle stick glued to the back at a diagonal for extra strength.
After gluing the sticks together you get to add the metal strip between the “wood pencil” and “pink eraser”.
I liked the look of the tin foil crunched up instead of smooth.
So I crunched the foil and then hot glued it over the popsicle sticks where the pink and yellow paint meet.
Making the Pencil Point
TO make the point of the pencil I cut out a triangle from a cereal box. You want to make sure the triangle is the right size for the pencil you made so it might take some trial and error to get one you’re happy with.
Once you have the triangles cut to the right size you can draw a black “lead” tip on one of the triangle corners.
Now along the bottom of the triangle put a line of glue and attach the point to the yellow end of your popsicle sticks. (I attached it to the back).
That’s it now you have a bunch of cute popsicle stick pencils for back to school.
Making the Popsicle Stick Pencil Door Hanger
Because I made various sizes of pencils out of popsicle sticks I decided to alternate their size on the door hanger.
To make the door hanger simply use twine or ribbon to make a loop at the top and glue it to the back of the first pencil.
Then you can have a long piece of ribbon/ string and attach the pencils to it or you can cut it into sections that go between the pencil. Both of these options work great it’s totally personal preference.
Make sure the string/ribbon is facing the correct direction before gluing the pencils to the string or you’ll have the backs of pencils facing out instead of the front when you hang your door hanger.
