With Mother’s Day coming up this month I wanted to share this free printable handprint butterfly poem that makes a perfect gift for mom, grandma, grandpa or dad.
Handprint crafts are some of my favorite to do with my kids and it makes such a great keepsake. I love creating things that show their hands as they grow.
This printable handprint craft has a poem and a butterfly shape for you to add wings to using your kids handprints.

Supplies For Handprint Butterfly Card
You only need a few basic supplies to make this cute craft, and it makes such a great gift.
The only things you need are:
- The Printable PDF (at the bottom of the post)
- A Printer and Cardstock or a print shop to get the PDF printed
- A cute helpers hand
- Washable Paint or ink (for stamps)
Because of how easy this craft is (and how few supplies you need) it’s perfect for doing with a group in a school class, daycare, or children’s Sunday school.
Making the Handprint Butterfly
Before starting to make this card the first thing you need to do is print out the poem printable (get it at the bottom of the post).
I personally recommend printing the card on cardstock since the paint works better with cardstock. If you print the card on regular paper consider using an ink pad (like one used for stamps) instead of paint so it doesn’t go through the paper.

Pro Tip: Ink pads are a lot easier to manage and less messy to use for a handprint than paint.
Once you have printed the Butterfly Poem paper you’re ready to add the handprint to the butterfly.
Paint or ink the child’s hand. If you’re making multiple handprint cards (like this one for Grandma) do all the handprint stamping at one time for easier cleanup.
Once your child’s hand is lightly covered in paint or ink you can make a handprint wing on one side of the butterfly. Reapply ink or paint and then make the other butterfly handprint wing.

I think it looks the best when the wrist goes along the butterfly body and the fingers go away from the body with the fingers slightly spread. But depending on the age of the child you’re doing this card with that may be challenging. With my 1 year old we were happy to get handprints on the page!
A thin layer of paint or ink gives the most crisp and detailed handprint. You may want to do a practice handprint or two on a scrap piece of paper before doing it on the card. It took us a few tries to get a handprint we really liked.
If you use paint be sure to paint their hand lightly. Too much paint and it’s harder to work with and the handprint isn’t as defined.

Let the card dry and then you can let your child add details to the page if you would like. Then it’s ready to gift to a loved one.
Butterfly Poem
The words on the Handprint Butterfly Poem Printable are simple and perfect for a child.
The poem reads “This Butterfly is a special gift for you, to thank you for all the things you do!”
