This pregnancy with baby three is the first time I have really experienced a pregnancy during the summer. Both of my other kids were born in the winter or early spring, so I was in the very early stages of pregnancy during summer. With this baby coming in September I would definitely say this is a summer pregnancy.

The first trimester of pregnancy during summer isn’t bad, but I’m realizing that having the second and third trimesters during the hottest part of the year isn’t quite as easy.
No matter what time of year you are pregnant there will be blessings, challenges, and struggles, depending on how you do with pregnancy.
Tips to Survive a Summer Pregnancy
During this pregnancy I have realized how much more of a challenge staying cool and hydrated is when it’s hot as apposed to when the weather is cooler. So I thought I would share some tips that are helping me survive and even thrive during this summer pregnancy.
Simplify
One of the big things I realized about having a summer pregnancy and older kids is that I can’t do it all. So while we still want to have fun and make memories our Summer Bucket list this year will be simpler than it has been in other years.
We will still be doing a lot of fun activities but especially the last few weeks of the pregnancy we will be sticking closer to home and enjoying more activities in nice air-conditioned spaces.
Head Outside in the Mornings and Evenings
Obviously one of the best parts of summer is getting to spend time outside. Our family loves going outside and exploring. While being pregnant shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the outdoors it is important to make sure you don’t get too hot and that you stay hydrated.
Heading outside in the morning and evening will help you enjoy being outside without as extreme temperatures as you can experience in the afternoon. Also sticking to the shade can help you stay cool.
Play in the Water
Another great way to enjoy time outside is to play in the water. Water is a great way to help you stay cool. So plan a trip to the pool, the lake or even just set up the kiddie pool outside in the yard.

Enjoy a Popsicles or Two
Enjoying a Popsicle is one of my favorite ways to cool down after being outside and my kids aren’t complaining. They love it when we have Popsicle breaks.
This summer we have really been enjoying the 100% juice Otter pops. We think they are sweeter and have a better flavor than the other Otter pops. If you haven’t tried them yet you totally should and then let me know what you think.
Don’t Forget to Eat
I don’t know about you but sometimes the heat makes me feel like I’m not hunger and I don’t want to eat. Not eating while your pregnant is not a good idea. For me when I go to long without eating while I’m pregnant it makes me feel sick.
So even if you don’t feel hunger don’t skip meals instead have a little snack and you might be surprised by how hunger you actually are after you start eating. Fresh fruit and veggies are my go to when I don’t feel like eating but know I need something.
Snack on Fresh Fruit
Fresh fruit is one of the best things to snack on during the summer. There are so many fruits that are in season during the summer months, which makes them affordable. Plus as a bonus fresh fruit is actually good for you and most fruits have a lot of water in them.
When I’m not feeling thirsty but I know I need to up my fluids having some watermelon or orange helps me enjoy a snack and also stay hydrated.

Drink Plenty of Cold Water
While sweet drinks and even soda can sound really tempting during the summer, drinking plenty of water is really important. I love drinking really cold ice water using a straw. It might sound silly but I have found that I can drink a lot more water using a straw than when I’m just drinking from a glass.
If you struggle drinking enough water you might want to check out these tips that have helped me drink more water. These are tips I still use since drinking enough water is always a challenge.
Dresses are My Favorite
While maternity shorts are great (my favorite are from Old Navy) I have found that dresses are a great way to stay cool during the summer.
There are a lot of great places to get maternity dresses, Target, Pink Blush and Amazon are a few of my favorite options. (Find tips for saving money on Maternity Clothes in this post.)
Fans and Misters are a Must
Outside or inside fans and misters are a great way to keep cool during the summer. If you’re going to be spending very much time outside this summer you should look into getting this personal fan necklace or this misting personal fan.
Relax – Put your feet up
Don’t forget to relax and enjoy this summer, oh yeah and be sure to put your feet up every now and again.
For me being on my feet in the heat can make my feet swell so relaxing and getting those feet up is really important. Even if you don’t swell because of the heat, taking time to relax is important now and after the baby comes.
