This year the kids also decided to set goals with Jared and I, which is really fun.

Setting Goals with Kids

Over the years I have tried setting goals in a variety of different ways. I have made vision boards, picked a word for the year and more. (You can read some of my ideas for alternatives to New Years resolutions here).

The the other alternatives have been fun I keep coming back to my favorite way to set goals and that is what we decided to do with the kids.

So what is my favorite way to set goals? Make a Top 10 List and setting monthly goals.

The printable pdf at the bottom of this post has a TOP 10 LIST page as well as pages for setting monthly goals.

Top 10 List – Easy Goal Setting for Kids and Adults

I love making a top 10 list at the start of the year with 10 things I want to learn, do or accomplish in the new year.

Sometimes it can be hard to narrow it down to just 10 things and other times it can be hard to come up with 10 ideas.

Overall I have found that a list of 10 things feels like a challenge but it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

The Top 10 list can be big things or small ones. Some can be accomplished and crossed off quickly, while others take all year.

Goal Ideas for Your Top 10 List

Some of the things Jared and I have included on our lists this year and in past years include:

  • Get out of debt
  • Lose weight
  • Spend 1,000 hours outside
  • Visit all the Maryland State Parks
  • Go to Yellowstone
  • Run a marathon
  • Go on 12 dates
  • Have monthly dates with each child
  • Save $x amount of money
  • Get into Mediavine
  • Read 12 self help/ business books
  • Make $x amount from this blog

A few of the things our kids put on their lists included:

  • Doing # laps on their bike at the track
  • Going to the lake # times
  • Going to Hershey
  • Eating a veggie every day
  • Save $100 in bank savings account
  • Playing games weekly as a family
  • Visiting grandparents # times
  • Exercise everyday
  • Read a book all by themselves
  • Go outside everyday
  • Read scriptures every night
  • Do more math

As you can see from what we have included on our lists there are so many things you could put on your list.

Now that you have a list of the Top 10 awesome things you want to do this year it’s time to set some monthly goals to help you accomplish those big things.

Monthly Goal Setting

For the monthly goal setting we decided to set goals in 4 different areas – Spiritual, Social, Physical and Intellectual.

You can set goals in these same 4 areas or pick your own categories/ topics of goals that will help you cross things off your Big 10 List!

The printable below has two pages for monthly goal setting one of them has the 4 areas we are using. The other is blank ready for you to add the areas you want to focus on.

The boxes are large for you to be able to write down steps needed to accomplish the goal or for kids to draw a picture of their goal.

Tips for Setting Monthly Goals with Kids

Both Jared and I like to set 2-3 goals for the month under each of the 4 different areas. For our kids we have them set 1 goal.

Having kids set only 1 goal in each area (that’s 4 goals) for the month helps keep it from getting overwhelming, especially at first.

For our family the purpose of setting goals with our kids is to create a positive experience with learning, growing and becoming better. So we want them to experience success!
