For the past several years our family has participated in the Light the World Challenge to help us focus on Christ during the Christmas season. For 2019 the Light the World challenge is to Light the World One By One. I love that this years focus is on individuals one by one.
At the top of the Calendar for 2019 it says “Sometimes it’s easy to lose the true meaning of Christmas in the excitement over twinkling lights and holiday dinners. But Christmas is all about honoring Jesus Christ.”
I would love to say that each year we do service each day leading to Christmas, but in full honesty some years we do better than others at taking part in the Light the World Challenge.
I love that the challenge to Light the World is a way to remember Christ this holiday season no matter what our lives look like.
The Light the World challenge is a way to help us remember the true reason for celebrating Christmas, it shouldn’t be something that adds stress to our holiday season.
Light the World Calendar Printable
On the Comeuntochrist.org website you can find a Light the World calendar with a different idea of some way to serve each day. The calendar is to be used whenever you need a reminder of the true reason for celebrating. I love that on the calendar it says that “if you miss a day, don’t worry! Serve when and who you can. “
Light the World as a Family
The Light the World challenge can be done as individuals or as a family.
Start the challenge by talking about different ways your family can serve others. Serving others and become more like Jesus is something that can start at a very young age. There are many simple ways that the kids can serve others and be a part of lighting the world.
Simple Light the World Ideas
There are so many simple ways to light the world that only take a few minutes, but can change someones day. Here are just a few simple ideas that come to mind:
- Write a thank you to someone for something they have done for you
- Write a letter to a missionary
- Read the scriptures and learn about Christ
- Read to young kids (yes even your own kids or siblings count!)
- Call and talk to a friend or family member you haven’t seen in a while
- Drop of dinner to someone who could use it
- Have the Missionaries over for dinner
- Be grateful
- Spend time one on one with a child, friend or sibling
- Help someone with their chores
- Help around the house
- Say Thank you
- Smile
- Be Positive
- Give Someone a Hug
- Be Present
Light the World Vending Machines
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be placing Giving Machines in 10 locations around the world. These vending machines are to help encourage people to Light the World.
These giving machines differ from typical vending machines, instead of getting something you can purchase items to help others. Items you can purchase include food, clothing, medicine and so much more.
Last year (2018) the Giving Machines raised more than $2.3 million for local and global charities.
