For years I have been reading Chicka Chicka boom boom with my kids and I finally decided it was time to do a Chicka Chicka boom boom tree activity.
The Chicka Chicka boom boom children’s book is a classic and popular children’s book and has been for years. Most kids and a lot of parents will be familiar with the infamous coconut tree the letters have so much fun climbing.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Book
If you’re not familiar with the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom it’s an alphabet picture book that was published in 1989. You can see it on Amazon here.
The book is not only fun to read with its rhyming words and colorful illustrations but it’s also a great way to introduce kids to the alphabet.
As you read the story the main stars of the book are the lowercase letters of the alphabet. But the uppercase letters also make an appearance.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom ends with the letter “a” taunting the other letters to climb the coconut tree again. This is the perfect invitation to read the story over and over again.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree Activity
After reading this book hundreds of times with my kids I decided it was time to do an activity to go along with the book.
Using craft supplies I had on hand I decided it would be fun to make a big coconut tree on our wall that the kids could put letters on.
Supplies
- Brown paper
- Tape
- Alphabet stickers
Making the Coconut Tree
First, we needed to make our coconut tree so we used brown craft paper and cut out a tree-like shape and a couple of branches.
We taped the tree to the wall and added a few green leafs we cut out of green construction paper. Then we were ready for the fun part.
We dumped out all of our foam alphabet stickers and started the search first for the letter a, then the letter b, and so on.
At first, I was planning on having the kids do both the upper and lower case of each letter. But then we ended up doing whichever they found first. So our coconut tree had a mix of upper and lower case letters climbing and partying.
As we found each letter we put it on our coconut tree. The kids loved seeing the tree slowly fill with letters.
By the end of the alphabet, we had a whole party of letters hanging out in our coconut tree.
After you finish putting all the letters on your tree you can read the book again and have the kids point to each letter on the tree as you read about it climbing the tree as a review of the letters.
