The Christmas decorations are coming down and it’s almost time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day! If you’re looking for a fun way to decorate this DIY Valentine garland is just the thing!
I love decorating our fireplace by hanging seasonal garlands and decorating the mantel. Before we had a fireplace I would hang garlands on the wall in our living room and that was fun too. Garlands are so simple to make and add such a fun holiday touch to the room.
A few years ago we made a really simple construction paper heart Valentine’s Day garland using string and construct paper. It was an easy craft to make with the kids and it was fun and festive.
This year we made a DIY valentine garland with different textured hearts and I love it! It’s so fun to see the different colors and textures in this garland.

DIY Valentine’s Day Heart Garland
This Valentine’s Day heart garland has 3 different types of hearts. You can use just one or two styles of hearts if you want. I loved them all so we included all 3 styles in our garland.

The three types of hearts are yarn wrapped, sparkly, and tissue paper.
All of the hearts start out the same as a heart-shaped cardboard cutout. It’s what we do after cutting the heart shape that makes these so fun!
Cardboard Hearts
To start any of the 3 different styles of hearts you need cardboard cutouts in the shape of a heart.
I used cereal and amazon boxes to cut out our hearts. To get the same shape for all the hearts you can use a template or a cookie-cutter like I did.

Trace the heart shape onto the cardboard and then cut out each heart shape. Once you have cut out as many hearts as you need you’re ready to start decorating.
3 Styles of Hearts
All of these hearts are easy enough to make that the kids can get in on the crafting if you want them to. Just know that the hearts might not turn out the way you thought they would when little hands are involved in the creation process.

I let my kids help make the garland and I’m ok with its imperfections, I think it adds character. If you don’t want the garland to have a child’s touch you could let them make a garland for their bedroom or playroom while you make the hearts for decorating the main room.
Yarn Wrapped Heart
The yarn-wrapped hearts turned out so cute and both of my kids loved helping me them.

Supplies for Yarn Wrapped Hearts:
- Yarn (we chose to make our hearts red but you could make them any color)
- Tape
- Cardboard heart cutout
Start making this heart by talking the yarn to your cardboard heart cutout. Wrap the yarn around the shape keeping the yarn tight.
Continue wrapping until the heart is covered. Depending on your patience the hearts can turn out completely covered or with a little more cardboard peeking through.

I think they look great either way, the more yarn does give it a more finished look while the hearts with cardboard poking through defiantly have a more rustic look.
Glitter Hearts
The glitter hearts are fun and I love how the glittery heart looks next two the other types of hearts.
Supplies:
- Cardboard heart cutout
- Paint
- Mod podge
- Glitter
- Paintbrush

Start by painting the heart shapes to give the glitter a colored background. For our silver hearts we painted them white first, you could also paint them grey, but I had white paint on hand.
For red or pink hearts I would paint the cardboard red or pink. Just pick a color that will look good if it shows through the glitter.
After the paint dries paint the hearts with mod podge and sprinkle with glitter.

Shake off the excess glitter and let the hearts dry. Once the hearts are dry mod podge over the glitter to keep it from coming off the hearts.
The glitter hearts are ready to be used in your heart garland or other Valentine’s Day craft.
Tissue Paper Hearts
The tissue paper hearts add a fun textured look to the DIY Valentine garland and they are really fun and easy to make with kids.
Supplies:
- Cardboard hearts
- Glue
- Colored Tissue paper cut into small squares
- Paint (optional)
If you want to you can paint the cardboard hearts to give them a more finished look. If you’re using a light-colored tissue paper you will want to do this so the brown cardboard doesn’t show through.

Once your heart is ready it’s time to add the tissue paper. Since my kids were helping I made dots with a sharpy all over the hearts so they knew where to put a dot of glue and tissue paper.

To make this heart put glue on the heart and scrunch up a piece of tissue paper and press it into the glue. Continue until the entire heart is covered.
How to Make the Valentine Garland
That’s it you have made all three different styles of hearts. Now it’s up to you how you put together your Valentine’s day heart garland. We did a different color for each style (silver glitter, red yarn, and pink tissue paper) and used them all alternating in a repeat pattern to make our garland.
You can do them all in one style, all one color, or mix it up! Have fun getting creative and making this a fun activity as well as a cute Valentine’s Day decoration.
