You guys it’s almost memorial day and the start of all things summer. For the past couple of years we have really enjoyed making different paper plate wreaths for different holidays. So I decided it was about time we made a patriotic paper plate wreath to use for memorial day, the 4th of July, and all the other patriotic holidays.
This paper patriotic wreath is a perfect craft for all ages. It’s easy enough for kids (even toddlers) to make and it’s cute enough to use as a fun decoration for all the patriotic holidays!
I mean how cute does this patriotic flag wreath look on my door? It adds a fun pop of red, white and blue and is perfect for summer!
Supplies
- Cheap Paper Plate
- Scissors
- Red, White and Blue tissue paper
- Glue
- Ribbon
- Hole Punch
- Markers (optional but does make it easier)
Putting Together the Patriotic Wreath
First to get ready to put together your wreath cut the red, white and blue tissue paper into squares. Depending on the age of your kids you might want to do this before having them come to make the craft.
My kids love helping cut the tissue paper but they get board with it long before we have enough cut. So I usually start cutting the squares and then have them come and help cut the last few or I keep cutting while they start putting the wreath together.
Next cut out the center of the paper plate leaving the outside edges still attached. This is going to work as the backing for your wreath.
Once you have a wreath shaped paper plate go ahead and use markers to make the flag sections on it.
I marked the paper plates before giving them to my kids. Older kids could do it all on their own.
I made a larger section blue and then alternated red and white sections around the rest of the wreath. I lightly colored the red and blue section with markers to make it easy for my kids to know what color of tissue paper to put in each section.
Optional: put white dots in the blue section for white pieces of tissue paper to make stars. My little boy did this and my daughter did not.
You can wait until the wreath is about done and decide where you want it to hang from or you can decide before you start gluing on the tissue paper and punch a hole to add the ribbon to later.
Now that everything is cut and marked it’s time to start gluing.
Pick a section and squiggle glue in that section. Then scrunch or crunch the tissue paper squares and glue them one by one into that section. Then move onto the next section.
After completely covering each section with tissue paper it’s time to add your ribbon and hang your wreath.
I love hanging the wreath on my pantry door to add a fun patriotic touch to the kitchen. The kids might like hanging them on their bedroom doors or you might have an even better idea of where to hang the wreath.
Just know that if you hang it up outside it might not last very long since it is made out of paper.
