I can’t believe it but our little princess turned 2 a couple weeks ago. For her birthday she wanted a pink Elsa cake. For our kids birthdays, we always try to do fun cakes that the kids pick so this year it was a Princess Cake.

Making a Princess Birthday Cake might seem a little daunting at first but this princess cake hack will work for all princess that wear dresses and it is so easy you are going to love it!
Princess Birthday Cake
Things You Need to Make The Princess Birthday Cake
- Glass Pyrex Mixing Bowl (I used a 1.5 qt Bowl)
- Round Cake Pan ( I used a 9-in pan)
- cake mix – or favorite cake recipe
- Princess Barbie (We used Elsa)
- Sprinkles
- Decorating Tips
To make the cake all you need is your favorite cake mix or recipe it’s up to you. Instead of baking it in a traditional cake pan bake it in a glass Pyrex mixing bowl. (I used a 1.5 qt bowl) This works as the skirt of your princesses dress.

Since Lizzie wanted her cake pink we not only cooked a cake in the glass Pyrex bowl but also a round cake pan. The cake from the cake pan makes a Jeweled Base for the princess to stand on and gives the cake added height. This is optional but I love the way it made the princess dress look more finished.
Note: If you decide to have the Jeweled base just make sure that your round cake is a little bit larger than the dress. You can make sure it will work by making sure that the bowl you use sits nicely on the cake pan with space around the base.
Putting the Princess Cake Together
Once the cakes are baked and cooled. I like to put them in the freezer so they are easier to frost. It’s time to decorate.
I cut the “dress” cake into layers and frosted between it so it wasn’t just a ton of cake. But that is totally optional.

First, level off the cake then, frost the round cake before placing the “dress” cake on top.
Now frost the “dress”. Frost the cake the color you want the dress to be.
Before doing fancy decorations on the dress or stage it’s time to put in your princess’s body.
We used an Elsa Barbie for this cake since we wanted an Elsa cake, you can use any Barbie you want. There are a lot of Disney princesses available as Barbies which makes this an easy way to have a Disney Princess Birthday cake.
Position your Barbie in the center of the cake and push down until the dress is about waist level on the doll. You will probably need to bend the Barbies legs slightly so that it will fit correctly.
Use some of the extra cake if you need

Getting Fancy
Smoothing the frosting on the dress and platform will make it easier to decorate and get fancy!
Now it’s time to get fancy’s I found using a piece of plastic wrap to keep the barbies hair out of the way made it so much easier.

Using a decorators tip create a dress top on the Barbie and decorate the dress however you would like. I used the Wilton 18 decorator tip and added ruffles down the dress, this is the same tip I used to create the dress top.
Then we added white sparkly sprinkles to the dress for a frozen effect!
For the platform you could easily leave it simply frosted. We decided to fancy it up by decorating it with sprinkles.

The beauty of this princess cake is that you can decorate it as simply or elaborately as you want and you can use pans you already have at home and not have to worry about cutting the cakes into a dress shape.
