Inside: Free printable summer schedule you can edit to work for you.
As a stay-at-home mom I love using seasonal schedules/ routines, so my kids have an idea of what to expect on the days we are home. I like making visual schedules for each season and having them on the wall in our kitchen.

This year I had a hard time figuring out how I wanted to format our summer schedule but ended up keeping it similar to the daily routine we had last summer.
I’m not sure it’s the perfect summer schedule but it works for our family right now.

I debated about doing a different theme days with a different type of summer activity each day of the week, but that kind of felt overwhelming.
I finally decided to create a summer routine that gives us a flexible routine instead of set daily summer schedule for the days we are home.
Summer Schedule
I want our summer days to be filled with fun things, lazy days, quality time and the magic of summer during childhood… it is summer vacation after all.
But I know we will all function better with a simple summer routine and some kind of plan for each day.

I am a planner and I’m planning our weekly summer schedule with outings from our summer bucket list, fun unit studies and things like that using my homeschool weekly planner.

We also have two calendars hanging in the kitchen with our fun activities and appointments so everyone has an idea of what days we will not be home.
On the days we’re home we are following the visual schedule that allows us to have days filled with summer fun, free play and a little bit of structure.
Summer Routine
Our basic daily summer routine is broken down into six time blocks…without times attached. I know if I put times on the routine I will feel behind when we don’t meet the scheduled time.
Slow Mornings
We aren’t big morning people around here…especially if we stay up late. Some days our slow mornings start with kids waking up at 7:30 or 8 and other mornings our kids aren’t getting up until 9 or 10.
During our slow morning time block we eat breakfast and listen to the news, do devotional, play games and the older kids can work on their Summer Learning BINGO or their chores.
Get Outside
Once all the kids are up or sometimes before they are all awake, we go outside and do different activities. Sometimes we just go to the backyard when not everyone is awake. Other days we go for a walk, play with friends, ride bikes or go to the park.

Lunch and Learning
After playing outside the kids are usually hungry so we do lunch and our read aloud. After lunch time we usually work on educational activities like our unit studies (if we are doing one that week) the kids continue to work on BINGO if needed and I do a little bit of schoolwork with my two littles.
Some days all we do is lunch and our read aloud and go right to quiet time (learning happens after quiet time or we just do the read aloud)

Quiet Time
Quiet time at our house is screen free and the kids are all in different rooms. During this time they can work on quiet activities on their BINGO card like journal and reading. They can also play quietly, listen to an audio book or rest, I don’t have approved activity lists for quiet time the main thing is they do it individually and it’s quiet.
Afternoon Free Time
Afternoon free time starts at a different time every day. This is the time kids can play with friends, craft or do anything else they want.
We often end up going outside during this time or doing some fun summer activities together if friends aren’t coming over.
Screen Time
The kids also get screen time during the afternoon, but they can’t play or watch screens until after 3pm. The no screens until 3 is a rule we have during the summer and school year.
Dinner and Family Time
My husbands schedule changes daily so the time we eat dinner fluctuates between 6-7:30 depending on the night. During this time we do dinner, play games as family, do yard work or other outdoor activities, go for a walk, etc.
Bedtime Routine
As part of our dinner and family time block that ends the day we also do our bedtime routine. We don’t have a set bedtime but we try to have a routine.
Each night we say prayer after everyone is read for bed (pj’s, floss, brush) and then we alternate snuggles with mom or dad.
We are trying really hard to get back into a routine of reading a chapter book each night. We usually read together 2-3 nights a week right now.

Like I mentioned before our routine during the summer months is very flexible but it is really helpful to use a visual schedule and have a routine for the days we are home.
