When Should You Announce Your Pregnancy_ A few things to think about before making your pregnancy announcement

Being pregnant with baby three has made me start thinking about when is the right time to share your pregnancy news.

When to Announce Your Pregnancy

There are a lot of different thoughts about when the best time to share your pregnancy news is. From personal experience, we have shared at different times with each pregnancy and for different reasons.

As Soon As You Find Out

Some people love to share the news as soon as possible. Others say you should wait to announce incase of a miscarriage or other complications.

Both groups of people have valid points. If you want to share the news early in the pregnancy you might still want to wait until after your first doctor’s appointment to verify that you are pregnant.

Then you will also have more information so you can answer some of the questions people are sure to have.

Personally I haven’t ever shared our pregnancy news with anyone other than Jared as soon as I find out. I enjoy keeping it a secret for a little bit at first.

The earliest we shared about one of our pregnancies was at almost 10 weeks. We only told our parents and siblings and then a couple of days later we found out we had a missed miscarriage.

After this experience I realized how grateful I was that our families knew so they could offer support and help.

But I was also very grateful that we hadn’t told others. I wasn’t ready to handle tons of questions and people still thinking I was pregnant when I wasn’t.

With our rainbow baby (baby #3) we told our families at about 12-13 weeks and shared our Pregnancy Announcement on social media at 16 weeks.

After The First Trimester

After the first trimester, they tell us that morning sickness should go away and the risk of a miscarriage goes down for most women.

For many people that 14-15 week mark is the perfect time to announce a pregnancy. This is definitely the most popular time frame for sharing the exciting news.

It also means you only have a few more weeks before you can find out the gender at an anatomy scan.

Ultrasound

With our second baby, we waited until I was about 14 – 15 weeks to tell our families with this cute picture of our oldest. This was a few weeks earlier than we originally planned because I started to show sooner and we were going to visit family.

With our second, we didn’t make it Facebook Official until we knew it was going to be a girl after the anatomy scan at 18 weeks.

After You Know the Gender

This is probably the least common time to announce a pregnancy it means waiting for 16-18 weeks before telling people about the news.

It can often be hard to wait that long because you’re so excited and you’re often starting to get a bump by this time.

Boy or Girl Silly String Gender Reveal

With our first baby, we didn’t tell anyone that I was pregnant, with the exception of my mom, until the day after our anatomy scan at 18 weeks.

We were so excited to be pregnant but we loved having our own little secret. We decided to enjoy the pregnancy without all the questions and concerns of friends and family until we knew the gender.

Final Thoughts on When To Announce Your Pregnancy

Since we live across the country from all of our family it’s easy to hide a growing belly. But more than the ease of keeping the pregnancies private both Jared and I love having a little secret just between the two of us.

We know that once we tell everyone that we are pregnant we will share that special baby with everyone. So it’s fun to keep it between ourselves for a while before you share the joy and excitement with our loved ones.

With our first two, there were a couple of people who found out early for various reasons. With our third, we kept it a secret from everyone for a while longer.

Now I know 10, 13, 15, and 18 weeks might seem like a long time to wait to announce your pregnancy. But that’s what has worked for us. (Notice the time we weight has gotten shorter)

So when should you announce your pregnancy? It’s totally up to you. There is no wrong answer. Each couple is going to announce the pregnancy differently and at different times and that’s ok.

The beauty of pregnancy is that each couple gets to decide what is best for them and their loved ones.
