How to Make a Soda Can Cake Tower (with a 12-pack!)

Inside: Step by step instructions to make a Soda Can Cake Tower perfect for a soda lovers gift.

Back in 2016, I saw the idea for a soda can cake on Pinterest and thought it would be a great idea for Jared’s birthday. I wanted to make the cake using his favorite soda, Coca-Cola.

I tried to find a tutorial and I found a few that each needed 30+ cans of soda. I wanted to be able to make the cake with only a 12 – pack so I decided to figure it out on my own.

There are a couple of different ways you can make this soda pop can cake one that is easy to move and one that you build where you want it to stay.

Supplies For Soda Can Cake Tower

  • 12 Pack of Soda
  • Ribbon to wrap around each layer of the cake
  • Hot Glue for movable cake tower
  • Cardboard for movable tower
  • Optional: Lottery Tickets, Gift Cards, Cash and Candy Bars

Putting Together the Soda Can Cake

I originally made my soda pop can cake as a cake that was assembled and not moved. This works great if you are using it as a decoration or don’t need to move it to a different location.

This type of cake is a lot quicker to put together and only requires 12 cans of soda and ribbon.

To make a soda can cake that you can move takes a little more time and a few more things. In addition to soda and ribbon, you also need cardboard, scissors, a pen, and a hot glue gun.

First Layer of the Soda Can Tower

To make the first layer of “cake” use 8 cans of soda and arrange them in a circle. It ends up being one can in the middle with 7 cans surrounding it. (7 pop cans with 1 in the middle and 6 around it also works for this layer.)

I tried to get all the cans facing out so you can see the name of the soda, instead of the back of the can.

If you’re making this cake and want to be able to easily move it place all of the cans together on a piece of cardboard and trace the outline, then cut it out.

After you have the cardboard cut out. Put hot glue on the bottom ridge of each soda can and glue it to the cardboard. Start with the middle can.

Once the cans are glued to the cardboard you can also add dots of glue to the sides of the soda cans to attach the cans to each other.

You can wrap each layer of the cake with ribbon or twine before making the next layer or wait and do all three layers at the end.

2nd Layer of Soda Pop Can Cake

The next layer is 3 cans placed on top of the first 8 cans in a circular shape.

For the second layer repeat the above steps using 3 cans of soda for either a movable soda can cake tower with cardboard or a non movable one.

I wanted to keep each of the layers of this cake separate so I didn’t have to worry about it falling over while transporting it.

I didn’t attach the layers of the cake together. I could still quickly set the layers on top of each other before taking it into a party.

If you want the whole cake to be stuck together attach the cardboard base for the second layer to the cans on the first layer before adding the cans.

Top Layer of Soda Can Cake

For the top layer of our soda cake wrap 1 can of soda in ribbon and set it (or glue it) on top of the other two layers.

If you didn’t attach ribbon as you went with each layer, after assembling the cake wrap each layer with a ribbon.

I have used 3-inch wide burlap ribbon as well as twine (wrapped around multiple times) and I love both looks.

Fun Soda Can Cake Tower Additions

For Jared’s birthday, I added a few scratch and win lottery tickets. I taped the tickets to wooden skewers and then taped the skewers to the soda cans.

Other fun items you could add to the cake are favorite candy bars, gift cards, or even cash wrapped around each can of soda.
