Kids Covered Wagon Treat (Pioneer Activity)

The kids and I made this cute covered wagon treat this past week and they were so fun and easy.

We recently read a book about the Oregon Trail and the kids had a little book club with some friends to talk about the book. So for book club, we made this treat as both an activity and snack.

This pioneer-covered wagon treat works great for a pioneer day activity, or to go along with a history lesson or read aloud. I think it would be a fun activity to do with a study of the little house on the prairie books.

For our book club, we put all the needed items for a wagon into a sandwich bag for each kid. This made it fast and easy for them to have everything they needed to make their pioneer wagon treat.

If you’re making these treats with a group I highly recommend making a bag for each person. Then give them the bag of ingredients and a small paper plate to make their wagon treat.

You could also make the covered wagons ahead of time and have them as a treat instead of having kids make them as an activity.

If you decide to have the kids make them (they will love it) be prepared for them to take creative license with their wagons. I was surprised with how creative some of the kids got with their wagons…some of them also ate their supplies while building so modified the wagons because of that.

Wagon Treat Ingredients/ Supplies

The supplies listed below are what you need to make 1 covered wagon treat. Most of the ingredients come in packages with more than is needed to make one wagon.

  • 1 Wafer Cookie
  • 2 Marshmallows
  • 2 Mini Oreos
  • 1 String of Licorice
  • 2 Animal Crackers
  • Frosting

Making the Pioneer Wagon Treat

The first step to making the pioneer-covered wagon treat is to gather the needed supplies. If you’re doing it with a group I recommend putting the ingredients for each wagon in a separate Ziploc bag as I suggested above.

Once you have all the supplies it’s time to put the wagons together. First, you’re going to take your wafer cookie and cut it in half. (I did this before putting it in the bags of supplies.)

After cutting the wafer cookie in half you’re going to stack the two halves together to make the bed of the wagon. You can put frosting between the two cookie halves if you would like.

Next, you’re going to add your wagon wheels. Open the two mini Oreos to give you 4 wheels. Put frosting on the inside of each of the Oreos and stick them to your wafer cookie wagon box. This will hold your wagon box together, which is why putting frosting between the two halves of the cookie is optional.

After adding your wheels make a little mountain of frosting on your paper plate for your animals to stand in and put frosting on top of your wagon box.

Stand the animals in the frosting and wrap the rope licorice (I used the pull and peel licorice) around the animals and put both ends in the frosting on top of the wagon box.

Push two regular-size marshmallows to the top of your wagon box creating the “wagon cover” and you’re done.

Now you have a cute covered wagon treat to enjoy.

If you’re making these covered wagons as a treat or snack for a party you could always just make the wagon and leave off the animals and licorice rein.
